I appreciate the defecating duck automaton on the cover. See "The Defecating Duck, or, the Ambiguous Origins of Artificial Life" by Jessica Riskin Critical Inquiry for the importance of that robot. Like others have said, an audie

West Elm is mass-produced garbage. Quality couches are expensive and you need to do your research. I highly recommend the Danish "Innovation" brand of furniture, which sits in a similar price category, but made of much much better

Are you worried about air quality? Seems to be a deal breaker (due to adverse health consequences).

Was in Aarhus over the summer. Thousands of bikes. People leave them unlocked outside. Seaside. Forests. An amazing food scene. Canals. A world class university. Happy people everywhere.

Theoretically (if the thesis of the article is correct and widely accepted), a company willing to invest in closed offices should have a major competitive advantage in hiring engineers (who would be attracted to the quality of work life in

I don't think it's the gui. I'm a relatively savvy user running Debian on a Thinkpad for more than five years now. Printing is still touch and go. I spent countless hours to get sleep working correctly. It is broken now and I

Have a contract that you draft that they counter sign. Set your own terms there. Any potential conflict would have to go through court in any case. Obviously not legal advice.

I recommend the Asus Flip Chromebook (running Debian under Crouton for development) or a refurbished Lenovo X2xx series. The ASUS is tiny for travel. The X2xx is larger, still pretty mobile, and built like a tank (military spec moisture and

It would be interesting to see the discussed effects in comparison with the effects of let's say increased sugar consumption for example.

A map would be extremely useful to illustrate the process (instead of a picture of dirt). I am also not clear as to why the new waterway would be considered a "new ocean." Would it not just form a strait or at most a sea as a part

I've used the 10" Asus Flip to write (and publish) a book with a great deal of scripting on the side. Incidentally, the keyboard is amazing--I prefer it to my Thinkpads. The smaller screen does force you think in a more modular wa

A healthy comment section needs active moderation. Consider getting your readership involved. You could, for example, follow the Stack Exchange model by giving frequent contributors more editorial powers in the comments section.

By my count, he bought five adapters and a docking station. This gives a decent "in the wild" report of what is required to get the machine connected to one's peripherals. Thank you for the writeup.

Mr. Shaw's book used to be a decent starter reference. I liked his step by step short chapters, but there were some red flags. For example, he spent several early chapters on string formatters, which are neither terribly common nor use

The suggestion that Facebook and other channels of distribution should filter "fake" or "bad" news is not well thought out. Why would we want a private entity have any say in what is being shared? We should be fighting f

Spec-wise the screens are not as nice. In practice, for coding, I would much rather have the anti-glare matte screen of the kind that comes standard on Thinkpads.

Running Linux. I don't have a 4k monitor, but multiple monitors are trivial to set up and automate with XRANDR. In addition, window managers like I3 allow for fully customizable, keyboard-driven navigation between screens and windows.

Did anybody else find the font distracting? The little connecting thing between "st" is too ostentatious, particularly when the site does not respect other typographical conventions, like the difference between n- and m- dashes. (

I would also recommend Lenovo Thinkpads, which are quite popular with Linux folks. The X and T in particular give a lot of bang for your buck. I am also eying Thinkpad 13 as a great beater machine replacement for my aging x230.

I'm aware of the novel. You are missing the point a bit, aren’t you? It wasn't about the origin of the word. What does one make of a company which chooses to name its product after a darkly dystopian piece of fiction?

The name "soylent" comes from Soylent Green, a 1973 sci fi film about overpopulation, where people survive by eating mass-produced plankton, which later turns out to be made out of old people. Naming a product "soylent"
