Programmers (me included) are intrigued with psychopathy: we like the idea of pure thought, unencumbered by guilt, untainted by emotions, conventions and niceties. But paradoxically we overromanticise it in the process: I am pretty sure tha

I've been Angry Gal too, but only for about two weeks - then I recognised the poor 'cultural fit' that I was being (my bad, I should have never taken the job in the first place) and I left for greener and more congenial pastu

> "Cultural Fit" is always toxic You clearly never had to put up with The Angry Guy. Cultural fit, I agree, it's a catchall term that covers everything from blatant aesthetic discrimination to merciful removal of toxic cha

I've never worked in a very small company, but I've been working in very small teams. While claiming a 'culture clash' seems pretty much of a copt-out from the employer's part, it's true that one single person

Ok, fine then :) I admit I've never met anyone so genuinely enthusiastic about pair programming, so it sounds unusual to me.

I don't see the two practices as antithetical: complex features with a lot of potential pitfalls take advantage from pair programming; code reviews are perfect for BAU tasks. I am a bit suspicious of the ecstatic tone that the author h

Has Delicious failed? It might not be flavour of the month anymore (since a long long time), and I don't know anyone who uses its social features. But as a way to quickly access my bookmarks from any device, it still has a job and it d

I am not sure about the implausibility you mention. "There are worlds who are simulations" !== "Most / all worlds are simulations". The second assumption is possible but by no means implied by the first. If we could

Very nice story indeed :D In the story, the characters talk about nested levels of simulation and how slightly disheartening is to know that they are not in the top layer, therefore not "real". Afai(!)k, there might as well not b

The brain in a vat that you predict in a couple of decades could be a brain in a vat that thinks they have put a brain in a vat. This type of assumption is _not_ falsifiable (like $deity existence and so on) therefore open to speculation, b

Programmer here. I've been in two places like that. One relied on its reputation to leverage and squeeze people to the last drop; the other, more realistically maybe, just paid a lot and expected a great deal of work and a constant dis

It can be really unappealing to deal with an existing codebase which contains whimsical choices, and ideally a team should have a turnover low enough to ensure continuity and consistency of coding style. And to overwork people it's har

Burnout and tunnel vision would certainly ensue in the medium term; or someone external would intervene and snatch the programmer from you, by proposing them a better deal. It can still serve you well, depending on the market you're in

"I am going to write an app that allows the user to send pictures to their contacts!" I guess one must have a fair bit of userbase karma + mystique to successfully reinvent the wheel, to make a funnier-to-use wheel that actually g

Do we really need a genderised programming language? As a female programmer, I don't feel discriminated by current programming styles - I think they fit my brain as well as anyone else's. I am afraid of positive discrimination whi

Isn't $299 a year a lot of money? Here in London the major supermarkets have time slots where they deliver for free (typically late in the evening), but even a prime time delivery, let's say, Sunday morning, costs no more than £5.
