While looking at the serverfault thread linked somewhere in this post, I found the following site: http://www.namingschemes.com/ It's a whole wiki full of naming schemes. It actually included the one I am using (Battlestar Galactica calls

There are lots of pools you could use that offer a vast amount of names, assuring that you never run out even if you have a very large number of hosts. Good examples in my opinion are names of things existing in real life, e.g. band names,

So? This does not help me at all. If my host is down, then my site is down. If my JavaScript CDN is down and I have no fallback, my site is down as well. You imply that "totalDownTime = CDNDownTime", while really it is "totalDownTime = Webh

There are two things to consider: First, you need to make sure that your filename is a long, unique, hard-to-guess string, that is easy to generate. This rules out all 5 UUID specifications: Version 1: MAC + timestamp => easy to predict

But those ideologists are right, Flash is evil in so many ways: a) It eats babies. (Seriously, look at how much CPU and RAM it eats.) b) It's insecure. Want a flaw that even users with a safe browser (ie not IE) are not safe against? Search

Last time I checked, Geocities didn't support HTTP keep-alive. They do however support gzip compression, which wget doesn't support. Also, as you noticed, including "Googlebot" in the User-Agent works around the bw limit. Did you archive re

How about http://allmydata.com/ ? They offer a JSON-based, restful API, an FTP interface or you can use their open source software which includes encryption.

This is not Apache specific. If you take a look at the HTTP protocol, you will see why: Every request has the full path in it (e.g. GET /images/xyz.png HTTP/1.0) , but it is actually optional (in HTTP 1.0) to specify the domain name/host th

Do you provide an API or do I have to use your client? Does the client run on 64-bit installations? Are you really offering storage for $10/100GB/month or $100/100GB/year? Sounds quite inexpensive to me. Do you also give discounts to studen

If you remove the statistics and the url submission form, so that only the redirection is kept alive (= no broken links) I think a $10/mo account should be sufficient.

If you only want to do redirection, no statistics stuff, then pretty cheap. If they don't want submission of new links, even cheaper, they could even run it on shared hosting.

No. Scribd: To watch our crappy swf stuff you have to upload another PDF. BitTorrent: To download a file (=bittorrent is content agnostic) you should re-upload parts of the file that you have already received.

Actually I "hate" Windows because after 15 years and 6 major version it is still crap. There are so many errors, bugs, crashes in Vista that you wonder if the developers of Windows are all retarded.
