Sublime because it's fast, does what I want, and I've been using it since 2012... lot of muscle memory and am too just used to it. I do have Vim keybindings on but I'm a light user of them. I haven't tried much else, hon

> You need to compare the difference in CoL as the percentage of that salary that goes towards CoL. Great insight. Here in NYC, I know a few frugal programmers who share a 2 bedroom with a friend such that he pays about 25% of his income

Programming Rust is currently ~$50 new on Amazon ($30 digital)... if you don't mind it being digital this is a bargain. I wonder why they decided to put this on there considering it just came out, but what a great thing.

Saving movies to disk makes a lot of sense - I like not having to rely on either a big company's services or library nor some sketchy, slow illegal streaming site. Not to mention a vast number of movies are not available for streaming

I hope torrents stay strong. No way I could've cultivated my love for films and music without Karagarga and What/Redacted, respectively.

This. I mute all my channels except #engineering (and if it was noisy I'd mute it too). If anything is urgent, people can mention or DM me. I also turn off notifications when I'm busy.

Yep. Any article or post about Facebook on this site is largely negative or full of self-congratulatory "I quit FB" posts. Neither attitude is _wrong_ but you are not going to be a balanced view point about Facebook's user ba

This is probably one of the best things I've seen posted in HN. Art books, aside from the actual art, contain essays written by academics or experts not found in Wikipedia or similar. They're also printed in small amounts and fair

To be fair, a lot of tech company offices are not much quieter than a WeWork e.g. open plan office/many places I've seen put engineers right next to people that have to be on phones all day.

Nothing worse than the standard American corporate building restroom system - each floor has one or two bathrooms per gender and each company has to give keys to the employees when they go to the bathroom. Aside from being annoying (how man

I can't understand why someone over 25 that has a decent career (assuming you are a programmer since it's HN) would still care about what some chad from high school is doing. Worrying about how "unfair" life is is an ene

Meh. Last year I spent ~500 hours playing JRPGs. Enjoyed all of that. It's only a waste of time if it's getting in the way of your ogoals. For me, I had nothing else I wanted to do with that free time.

If Japan isn't doing it, then I am guessing Americans don't either. You barely see 3DSs outside anymore. Personally I don't bring my Switch outside because it cost a lot of money, while my 3DS was $100 used. Kind of a weird a

Most HN users live in urban areas. Here in NYC your average check out line is people on their phones and/or with headphones on. And before you say NYC is an outlier, it was the same when I lived in semi-rural suburban Texas.

Agreed. I would feel suffocated if I lived in Midtown Manhattan. In my Brooklyn neighborhood the density feels fairly low (10-15 visible in the street). Green space isn't great for most but I happen to live two blocks from a park. Many
