I don't get why people say this. You're acting like the npm team is desperate for contributions and fixes and the Yarn people are like "No! We'll make our OWN tool!". It's the literal opposite. npm hasn't

My problem with most awesome lists that aren't by Sindre is that they become a laundry list of random libraries. They're not curated. Is everything there actually awesome and high quality?

Is it true that makers don't "want" to pay for software or is it because they're so used to software being free?

Is that a West-only thing? My admittedly minor experience with some Japanese people is that in many settings they hide any discomfort (including outright anger) in order to not make a scene or lose face. In fact, if can pinpoint being angry

Same. I don't doubt many lower income families pressure kids to get merit scholarships, but it's not true that higher income families don't pressure kids as much. In fact, I'd argue (anecdotally also!) that the American

I wasn't alive in 1956 nor have I studied the 1950s enough to make a valid judgement, but I graduated college this year and high school in 2012 and the attitude was definitely one of uncertainty. If you didn't get X grade or Y int

Heh, way more than 10% of my CS classes' questions were how to do stuff in Emacs (what my professor said we should use). I used to just use Sublime and `scp` the files back to the school server.

The problem is that bootcamps are 3 months of "intense" and pressured learning the most marketable language at the time and as far as I know aren't accredited like regular universities. What I'd like to see exist is a 1~

Are SE degrees common the US? I've only seen a couple of colleges that offer them and they weren't very good colleges or quite obscure. If the top 50~ universities offered a SE degree that included say, half of a CS degree with th

Elixir shines by how easy it makes it to write good documentation. The Markdown-renderd docstrings for modules and functions can be converted into nice websites[1] or are available in the command line[2]. [1] http://elixir-lang.o

The best of this kind of apps I've found is Focus for Mac[1]. It works at the OS level, allows you to block apps and sites, and doesn't get disabled if you restart the computer. A downside is that it's not free. [1] https:&#

I also don't get why they're coupled a lot... they're very different once you get past that they're both "functional" (and Elixir really just has HOFs and immutability by default, it's very practical). If

At this point the "come work with Elm" only works at places that have long-term Elm experts and fans (e.g. No Red Ink which hired its creator, has their lead evangelist, and probably more than half the top Elm people in the world)

Right, I get the last part. Just saying I wish I could have it now with little to no configuration :-) Not blaming Elm, it's still quite young and evolving.

The idea is to render as much of the app (usually the "shell" or the static content) through the server and then the client-side JavaScript takes over. As of right now support ranges from excellent (Ember FastBoot, out of the box)

FilmStruck is the service I am waiting for the most. As someone who used to pirate terabytes of films from Karagarga and other "good film" trackers, I'm happy to be able to support Criterion and Turner in this endeavor.

The tone of the book is that of learning programming and computer science for enjoyment, learning, and fun. That's what makes it timeless. A "stronger" example of this tone would be The Little Schemer series.
