reddit ads aren't very profitable as most of the userbase is probably logged out or just goes to /r/all. reddit also houses tons of NSFW and controversial content which probably scares some companies away, even if their ads w

In the case of Facebook, there's no judgement or moral side to take. They broke the rules Apple set when allowing Facebook to be in the App Store and use internal enterprise certificates. Objectively, Apple's behavior was fair.

The book is good, but could've been one long blog post. It also sadly is not very relevant for many workers. Dr Newport is a tenured, famous professor. He sets his own schedule and probably works by himself. I'm an average tech wo

I've come to the same conclusion also by age 25, even though I have no children, am not married, or are religious. Building software is enjoyable and I do my best, but I work to support a lifestyle I enjoy and be financially secure.

I guess my point is that in my anecdotal experience, parents homeschooled kids to "protect" them from regular society. Ergo, they were very sheltered and only able to socialize within the church. If it works for them, great, not h

In my experience growing up the homeschooled kids were usually from very religious families who did not want their kids being social with the general population, so you have a point there. I wonder how a "regular" family that happ

My #1 thing would be learning databases and data modeling - most of the time I've made mistakes at work has been because of a bad data model. Most of the time I've made slow software was because I lacked understanding of SQL queri

I get the sentiment but if you want to be able to point to things that you built years ago software is probably the worst career to take. We shutdown, delete, replace, and rewrite our work all the time. The small amount stuff that lasts ove

I pay for software pretty often. Most of of it is $10-15 max unless it's professional tools. That's not a lot of money for me. Most recently, I paid for the Mac version of Soulver ( https://www.acqualia.com/soulver&

While grandparent's comment shows an extreme situation, I agree with the quote. I occasionally see comments here complaining about the ephemerality of the work we do... but I see no other alternative outside of a few domains. I fully a

Rule of thumb - outside the original lists by Sindre Sorhus, most "awesome" GitHub lists are of very poor quality and curation. They're made with good intentions but rarely checked or updated.

I’m debt free as of December 14 so 2019 will be all about having sizable savings. Pretty easy. Aiming for six months but won’t stop at that.

This was a problem I had with the book. Newport is a tenured professor - he can do what he wants when he wants. I can sort of get deep work time done but it’s not always at the same time or as long as I plan it to be.
