Consider the physics of the simulator is literally the physics of our current universe. It need not be running on a binary substrate, the computation platform could just be the mass of the universe over time.

That's like a sim saying that their world would be impossible to run on the desktop in their simulated living room. That is tautologically true.

Yeah, that's why my favorite way of reading him is via his short stories. Just enough to get the big idea across and not get lost in too much detail.

You're talking about a digital<->analog interface. Take a digitally encoded audio file, read it out and turn it into sound waves using a digital analog converter, play it out on physical speakers, record it back with a microphone

Those are trivial surface level differences relative to the central idea of encoding, storing, replicating, editing digital information, which interfaces with other digital and analog systems.

Rather than assert the negative, can you state some positive facts about one or the other that makes this point clear?

That seems to be the point the parent is making. Tautology is the the only way we can explain the way life happens to be -- it's because it's advantageous for it to be that way.

Georgism is a pigovian tax on individual land ownership and rent collection. It would reduce or remove taxes arising from labor or capital entrepreneurship, and purely tax the zero-value-add rent collected by the "landed gentry".

Does "Ponzi scheme" just mean "bad finance thing" now? It is impossible by definition for a fund that hasn't had inflows for 30 years to be a Ponzi scheme.

There are many games at different abstraction levels in finance, and I agree to find an edge at the level you're describing is exceedingly difficult. That said, Fama and French won a Nobel Prize with data stewardship and regressions. T

It's worse than avy because avy (and vim-sneak, evil-snipe et al) allow you to input the prefix char(s). Avy in general is insanely powerful, and abo-abo's set of elisp packages contain some of the most well thought out UX, held b

Ted Chiang's Exhalation is one of the very best I've read in this vein (also in the GP's sense of "life on different entropic timescales"). Highly recommended if you haven't read it yet.
