It was the style at the time. There are a lot of programs from that era with stupid, oversized nothing standard ui's, windows xp was a study in restraint compared to many applications. I think computers had just gotten powerful enough

I am not very familiar with FreeBSD's pf but my understanding is that fbsd integrated it from OpenBSD and then proceeded to put a fair amount of work in making it more performant(multi core) while OpenBSD put most of it's work int

Yes, massively influential, but was it ever used or popular?, I always think of it as sort of the poster child for the danger of "design by committee". Sure it's ideas spawned many of today's languages, But wasn't t

The whole point of markdown, really it's whole value preposition is that it has nice looking plain text. And don't get me wrong that is a hell of a value to many people, myself included. Yes it is a terrible markup language, And I

And it was bad at other use cases, having used both (3270 and vt) you can do 3270 workloads on a vt(granted less efficiently) but vt style asynchronous updates were very hard on a 3270. If I had to pick one I would pick the vt. And footnote

How bad is it? I mean you have the source, it could be ported. Or am I completely misunderstanding and you specifically want the old toolchains, in which case A respectful moment of silence for compilers lost. Speaking of porting I have alw

I think that was what I was trying to figure out, how the program was passed. but OpenBSD does not do nested interpreters, it looks like if I had tried Linux it would have worked.

I am on openbsd. which does not allow it, it looks like nested interpreters are s supported on linux. So my loss there.

The thing that surprised me was that you can't write an interpreter in an interpreted language, at least not in obsd. It is possible if you jump through a few hoops but you can't directly call it. An example: if you made a languag

It is double weird because unix has always supported this. I think was an accident of how the unix filesystem was implemented but basically, every file has at least one name but can have as many as you want, if a file ever has zero names i

Enumerating all values probably can't be done in python as that requires some sort of unchecked loop construct, that is a goto or bare loop nether of which is present in python. perhaps a recursive solution(throws up a little in mouth)
