Nice to see that I'm not the only one - lasted 9 months trying to adapt to Elixir and couldn't. My background is Scala/Rust with heavy use of effect systems and reliance on writing the types out and then solving the puzzle of

I find it very strange that most of the comments are about how this is okay. I don't think it is, because it prevents software evolution and impedes maintenance. My comment mostly goes to the "hacky" way of implementing somet

I use salt for configuration management of the machine itself (system-wide settings, packages), a dotfiles git repo for desktop configuration files with submodules for certain things (like package managers for vim and zsh). For development

Fedora - it's modern but stable. I think they have very decent QA but also quite up-to-date kernels, which is important when running on newer hardware. I don't care much for the Gnome default desktop though - use sway and QT-based

I really wish there was an option to decouple the core git functionality from the 'fancy' stuff (PRs, actions, issues) etc. When your CI pipeline runs directly from your git repository, not being able to commit/merge means yo

Right, you can use _ as the placeholder for a type and it works with the bounds syntax. I probably did not make it clear enough - my point was that Java is also not as "simple" (for some definition of "simple" the author

I have to agree. Sometimes you do find developers with so much tunnel vision of the "one true way" that it becomes difficult to open their minds to doing things slightly differently. For example, the null safety example and the co

Frequently data produced by hand (by developers writing the tests) or randomly generated (by something like quickcheck) does not have all the edge cases you would encounter in real data. So there is some justification to having real data av

I was also going to mention this ( https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/DNS_Rebinding_Protections has a few notes). dnsmasq has many other uses like tunneling all your DNS traffic through dnscrypt ( https://www.o

Well, on one hand it's not a big deal because it's all the EULA and you've presumably read it and agreed it to it before booting up. On the other, it's a pretty big deal because I view my computers as extensions of my br

Sigh I really wish it was easier to use a non-tracking OS. Personally, I use Hardened Gentoo and actively avoid downloading binaries + a lot of other tweaks to the "standard" Linux setup to patch what I see as obvious holes. Per

Which is fine by me - I consciously choose to boot into my gaming PC and start up Steam. My gaming friends are a small fraction of my friends. And spending habits are pretty easy as well - basically whenever there is a major Steam sale. And
