I don't think that's necessarily true, though. Even back in the pre .NET days, when Microsoft pretty much did have a monopoly on PC desktops, Visual Studio (not VSCode, but its full-fledged big brother) had pretty awesome DX. An

That's fascinating. You should do a writeup about it! I had thought (perhaps incorrectly? it's not something I've spent a lot of time pondering) that a stateful connection like this is fragile in the real world compared to HT

I think yorwba said it best... if an organic community develops naturally around one language or another, cool, encourage it and make it easier for them however you can! But no need to "fake it" with preemptive translations of you

I have a Jura automatic espresso machine that I've used every day, multiple times a day, for many years now. I bought it used and didn't really expect it to last, figuring I'd upgrade in a few months. But several years and cr

If your project is multilingual, sure. Otherwise anyone can translate it on their own anyway. Look into translation management systems for maintaining a source of truth. There's a lot of them out there.

I wouldn't say they're "good", but it's cool that they've managed to stay somewhat open at all. In an alternate timeline, Microsoft might've won out with single vendor .NET everywhere. The DX would be bett

When I read this, the first thing that came to mind was "until you have to work with time zones". I generally enjoy working in JS, but it's such a pain point for me that I can't help but not think about it whenever I see

It really depends on your role. I still think our job is ultimately to solve problems for users and/or other stakeholders, and that coding is just one of the tools we use. But it's not always the best tool. Even as an IC, I'v

How do you enforce input and output compatibility across modular functions and projects without strong types? Is there a better standard way to specify the accepted input shape and expected output options?

Great answer. Just wanted to add that JavaScript is also moving towards a similar immutable, functional style. The old style of chaining together a lot of calls is not as common anymore.

It seems like most of those issues could be solved with a distributed orchestration layer, the same kind used to power SETI@home, BOINC, crypto mining, RC5 decryption back in the day, etc. E.g. if the administration of billing, compute, and
