Familiarity lessens fear. I've been coming to Clojure from Java so to me the JVM and its standard libraries are a feature not a drawback.

The worst example of this that I've met to date is Douglas Hofstadter and Emmanuel Sander's Surfaces and Essences. It conveys such an important message but it repeats itself so often that the eyes start glazing over.

I've read it. It was an easy read. No mathematics. Every occurrence of "NP-complete" was replaced with "intractable" and there are tons of anecdotes, many I hadn't heard before. I didn't come away from the

On the other hand the fact that you're reaching all the way to Turing to exhibit a clear impact on practice suggests that for the programmer without such grand aspirations there isn't much to be gained.
