There is no clear definition with universal agreement. It's a hype-y term applied with... varying levels of rigor. However, roughly speaking, "serverless" rolls together 3 features: 1. Fine grained pay-per-use (e.g. pay for a

Hi there HN, This is a prototype of something that lets you build AWS Step Functions in regular Python code. I think step functions are very neat, but have a suboptimal programming interface (essentially an assembly language in JSON). Howev

It's true that they're conservative, but there have been non-trivial forks in its history. If a fork proves itself by doing something significant that the original can't or won't, things can get interesting! I wouldn

I'm so perplexed that someone would feel the need to attack an open source developer for a gentle suggestion of an optional donation. You're free to pretend there's a constrained license, and pay the project for their work. A

Maybe VMware? There was a paper about how, in some cases, emulation was faster than hardware virtualization support. This was way back when intel's hardware virtualization support was new and VMware had already spent years optimizing

Because people use it. It's been around a while and has an ecosystem around it. (This is the interesting thing about AWS, they keep the focus on what people do use, rather than some opinionated idea of what they should use.)

Not _just_ placebo. If you tend to favor very closed positions, or end up placing pawns in ways that make your bishops useless, then the knight might be better sometimes, even though the general idea of bishop > knight is correct.

Yes, the throughput results are pretty great, as is this work in general. It's worth noting the memory usage, though -- "Go’s garbage collector needs a factor of 2 to 3 of heap headroom to run efficiently (see section 8.6)".

The comment you're replying to does not describe a process list. Users do understand the concept of apps, obviously. A log of "App X used the camera", "App Y accessed your location" is well within what non-tech-sav

Congrats on this launch, it's great to see serious efforts at Kubernetes simplification and I hope you succeed! K8s bills itself as a "platform for platforms", and such projects are a real test of that idea. Questions: 1. Ho

I don't think people understand the vastness of resources that FB and Instagram have at their disposal. This is not a particularly hard problem. Yes it's not a simple SQL query. But they do solve it -- in fact this was a bug th

This article dives much deeper than I expected. It sounds like a fantastic resource for a manager, especially in a startup, but a lot of it also relevant for tech leads.

Right, you package up your dependencies. That doesn't mean you don't have any! Anyway, what I'm getting at is, the platform has to load a bunch of code, sometimes that will take longer than the latency that you can hide behi

AWS is not a great place for small projects that you want to set up quickly. There are a lot of options with a much more lightweight setup experience: zeit/vercel, netlify, digitalocean, firebase.

I'm so glad this realization is the top comment on HN. I think Fizzbuzz can be actually a reverse test: if an experienced programmer can fail fizzbuzz in an interview, then maybe it's the interviewer who screwed up.
