Agree. Much more interesting is the nugget that "your car keys always travel farther than your car" (assuming you're only using one set of course).

Seems legit. These topics should not form any part of work or government. What you do in your own time is of course completely up to you, as with any other NSFW content.

Totally agree but there is tldr for that. I learned recently that tldr also has separate pages for subcommands.

Not the OP nor knowledgeable in this area but I would suspect / hope postgres compatibility as a start. The last time I looked into whether I could use cockroachdb as a backend for my Airflow cluster, it wasn't possible due to com

Thank you. This is a very insightful comment that pinpoints something I could never quite put my finger on. So the issue is that you need a git pull or something like it to prevent branching. Chat etc... achieves this through real-time stat

I'm in the opposite position: known about SPQR for decades but never heard of this meme and clearly missed it. Can you explain the meme please because I didn't understand the hits I got when I just googled it.

Not sure if this is what you had in mind but here are the links to the two papers that I was referencing. [1] covers the first 40 years of databases. [2] fills in the gap of the last 20 years and gives their thoughts on the future. My apolo

I was also concerned about the wasted overhead. However I guess it's just there for compatibility (since space is cheap) and for common encodings you'll be able to skip reading it with range requests and use your trusted codec to

Andy Pavlo also deserves a shout out; he's an authority on databases and lives a "data oriented lifestyle". See his two "What goes around comes around ..." papers for great overviews of the past and future 50 years

I'm a big fan of Wes' work and Pandas was incredibly influential. However technically it wasn't his best work. In terms of selling points, I think that the Arrow data format is technically much better and more influential on

What we wanted was AI that cleared our technical debt and did our maintenance so we could focus on greenfield projects. What we got was AI producing slop on greenfield projects which we have to debug and maintain.

One missing feature is Windows Explorer Shell integration for File Hash checks, e.g. for downloads. Hopefully it won't be too much longer until this lands: https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/issues/57

The benefits are that ASV / USV files are trivial to parse with simple string splitting since you don't have to worry about nesting and quoting. Here's an example of what a USV looks like: Folio1␟␞ Sheet1␟␞ a␟b␟␞ c␟d␟␞ ␝ Shee

So ASCII actually had dedicated characters for this, 0x1C-0x1F. The problem is that they are non-printing. Unicode has rendered analogs, U+241C-U+241F, but they take more bytes to encode, which can significantly increase file size in large
