I don't think this is a fair use of the word "normally". The service may have been working within SLA . Based on the data in this article, it was not working the way it works most of the time . I think most people would int

They also probably have one or more test regions where they could perform a test like this. But it's presumably not at nearly the same scale as us-east-1, the region affected by this incident. And to a considerable extent the problem w

I've found them to be very opaque in most contexts, but for major outages (which have been rare), they do have a history of solid postmortems.

Sorry to hear that! I'll follow up with you offline to make sure we don't let something like this happen again. Thanks for letting me know. EDIT: we try hard to respond to every personalized message we receive. However, we get a l

Good point: if you don't need any local storage at all, then r4s are a bit cheaper. Still, an extra $576 / year (the price difference between i3.xlarge and r4.xlarge) for 950 GB of SSD really seems quite cheap, especially as that&

Wow. This is a massive price drop from the I2 instances... so massive that I question whether I'm reading it correctly: i2.xlarge: 4 vCPU / 14 ECU, 30.5 GB RAM, 1 x 800 SSD, $0.853 per Hour i3.xlarge: 4 vCPU / 13

Tesla comes off extremely well in this report. For one thing, the 40% statistic cited in the headline appears to be well supported by the NHTSA report (section 5.4) and actually manages to frame the incident in a very positive light: ODI a

It's cash-neutral for us. Suppose a new hire gets 10,000 options with a strike price of $1.00. (These are not real numbers.) They will pay $10,000 up front to early-exercise the options. We give them a bonus of $10,000. Net cash impact

This is exactly what we do at my startup: our options are early-exercisable, we pay a bonus equal to the strike price, and we set up the 83(b) paperwork for you. (We don't gross up the bonus, so you will owe taxes on the strike price,

Wait: seriously, a 1.5 hour multi-region GCE outage just last night? That would be huge, how is it that we haven't heard about this? The linked /16015 status report doesn't have much information.

Sure, these are reasonable arguments, which are commonly used. Clearly this justifies holding on to some cash. But I question whether it justifies holding on to this much cash. At some point it has to reach diminishing returns.

There's cash available for The Next Big Thing, and then there's $215B (Apple's current cash). They could buy, say, GM outright (market cap: $48B) and barely make a dent.
