What about dataflow programming? Shell scripting is one example. I think the same thing could be implemented using event driven programming, the event being the completion of some function, though that would be a little less clear.

Readability depends on the writer, and if someone is trying to duplicate the functionality of C++ in C I expect they're liable to do a worse job than using C++ directly. void* pointers are one example of why.
