I can't help but wonder - dragonfly, Maven etc. points to some very sinister, amoral leadership. Has this always been there, or only under the Pichai regime? I remember, for example, that Eric Schmidt was very keen on an absolutist dat

I think additinonally, conversely, dystopian fiction is reflective of political attitudes - if you're in a repressive country and want to criticise the government, then you can write a fictional work criticising some other government -

This is what I understand - in the Hindu tradition (perhaps it's similar in Buddhist and Catholic traditions) you are supposed to enter a new life when you become a Sannyasi (monk). One of the initial rituals in many schools is to perf

I truly sympathise. Hope you hang in there, and wish you all the best. I can relate to some of this - when I post on math overflow, my questions are heckled for poor English - by French mathematicians, when the reality is that I grew up in

Gamification is overt and transparent psychological manipulation. I had friends in Sociology etc. who had to conform to elaborate ethics compliance guidelines before launching surveys etc. Why is gamification not similarly controlled?

It renders most websites I visit (reddit, Facebook etc.) fine enough. It takes a long time to start up, however. One really bad point about it is that on MacBooks, it seems to use up the battery charge really fast.

I too don't see why tsv is better than csv. That said, as many people have pointed out, commas have legitimate uses in fields like Address of a locality etc. and this could cause a problem in scripting. About exporting using random cha

IIRC "The Garden of Forking Paths" is an interesting story by J. L. Borges, from where the title of the paper is probably taken.

I have not seen a cogent explanation for the ban, other than their volatility. I suspect the ban is because of the fact that governments are wary of cash outflow from the country. This is a problem with developing countries, especially. I t

Probably unrelated. This crisis is due to aggressive lending to unreliable parties, leading to mass default. The Lehman analogy is apt and to the point.

One of the disastrous consequences of the current government rule is the stifling effect it has had on press freedom. There is no honest discussion of the issues. I have invested in the non-banking financial sector, as have many other India

Another nice concept: normal numbers. These are numbers which have a very basic property of randomness: getting the block frequencies right. [1] The strong law of large numbers implies that almost every number in the unit interval is normal

As a customer, I find OYO hotels to be very bad. There are hotels that I otherwise would not even have gone to (since low end hotels in India are appallingly filthy), but the OYO label lends them greater credibility. I avoid OYO when I can.
