They do think they own every computer they have code on. This is modern computing. Your hardware is an extension of "the cloud", if you let MS, apple, or any other big co into it.

What do you think an algorithm is? This weird criticism is kind of a "tell", for what it's worth. Ciphers are algorithms. This is unnecessarily combative. I'm disappointed by your posts in this thread, because they'

It's been years, but I recall that, for example, when you know every piece of plaintext starts with " https://www ", or perhaps know the full contents of particular messages, it may become some degree easier to brut

Proof that you don't need to be super-human to build something useful, also demonstrated by your freshman CS student anecdote.

Again you're mistaking my point. I know enough to know what I don't know and the risk involved in doing any serious crypto work, that I can't solo build libraries to protect financial transactions or whatever willy-nilly. It&

All I'm reading here is more of the same scare-mongering. I don't casually implement cryptosystems to be used in critical situations, and I wouldn't attempt it without a serious amount of research. But "never do it yours

It wasn't 'an algorithms class' but grad level cryptography. We did implement boxes as a project and were graded on them. Where do you think people learn this stuff? Super secret cryptography school? I even used it. I previou

The stuggle was real in the early web with getting companies to do proper password storage and authentication but the fact that seasoned professionals turn to auth0 or okta (and have been bitten by this reliance!) nowadays strikes me as a l

I honestly think it's a meme born of propaganda. 'Don't roll your own' is good advice a lot of the time when there are hardened libraries at your disposal, but who does it serve if less people know how to build useful

I went and re-watched the PBS Spacetime episode on neutron star collisions, and while he didn't address this specifically (at least in that episode,) there was an animation that seemed to show beams emitting from the poles. I think it&

Listen guys, I don't even drink water, just liquid cheese, and after my daily cheese cleanse (don't ask, too graphic,) I feel great. People always ask where I get this sharp cheddar cologne, but the scent comes naturally.

If I said "free dogs" does it mean I'm giving away dogs for free or are demanding that they be freed? Maybe referring to dogs that have escaped captivity? It doesn't hurt to disambiguate, particularly in the context wher

Marathon 2 by Bungie also had weird non-euclidean maps with overlapping sections in the late 90s I think. I miss the customizability of that game. Early bungie works were up there with early blizzard or early valve. They sold a tool for fun

I think it was FUBAR before Pat came back. That was always going to be a tough ship to right. I'm not sure how much you can credit him with stumbles and successes since, but at least Arc is looking decent with the most recent release.
