I don't think that patents are a particularly good proxy for innovation - I've never even tried to get patents for a lot of the most cutting-edge stuff I've worked on (that would, in my lay opinion, be worthy of being granted a patent). And

I'm a bit of a compiler neophyte but if profile guided optimizations yield such a drastic improvement, why doesn't Mozilla (or my distribution via their package manager) put out binaries that were compiled with PGO?

There's definitely something missing from that story ... How did the 'attacker' just happen to have a wardialer and know to use it that night? Why couldn't the NOC just shut off that one guy's service? Why can't I find any reference to this

You really think that macros have almost nothing in common with functions? Granted that the semantics are a little different but, in my mind, macros and functions are just two different tools that serve the same goal: allowing for code reus

Well, my first thought would be using macros to ensure you never have 'unsafe' strings anywhere. But, for some inexplicable reason, Joel says "Don’t use macros to create your own personal programming language." How is using macros to encaps

The real problem is that the heuristics that Mail.app and Gmail use to determine which emails constitute a thread/conversation are slightly different. That means that GMail might count ten messages as being part of a conversation, but Mail.

It might be useful to be able to see the average score for my last 50 comments on my user page. In principle, I could of course compute it myself - but might as well have the computer do the tallying for me ;-)

I think the key problem (no pun intended) is that email encryption can't be securely implemented on the server side. Simply put, most of the people who are paranoid enough to need email encryption don't trust Google (GMail) with their PGP p

The one point that I agree with the author on is that it is exceedingly hard to write a non-trivial closed-source application that is easy to install and works on all Linux distributions (or even just the major ones like RHEL, Fedora, Ubunt

Windows has had 64 bit versions available since XP. Just like Linux. Hell, I'm running vista 64bit on my desktop (well, I can dual boot into it) right now.

Depending on who I'm talking to, I've heard that Princeton, MIT, and Harvard are each the best in the world (for undergrads). I'm not really in a position to judge, so let it suffice to say that all three are fairly impressive.
