I think everyone agrees the Backblaze (bb) has no performance - and that's fine. But a lot of his complaints are about reliability, and thats kind of a moot point since Backblaze (and anyone sane) stores every piece of data on at least two

I actually love having this question at my current job. "So, what do you do?" "Well, have you seen 'Terminator'? "Yeah, of course." "Well, I'm helping to write SkyNet" It's actually not too far from accurate since one of my contract

I think (hope?) the implication is that the sun is always shining on some of this world-wide network of panels - so we don't need huge batteries to store power for nights/cloudy-days. Kind of like the old saying that "the sun never sets on

Incidentally, I've seen some people argue it's more portable to use '#!/usr/bin/env sh' than '#!/bin/sh'. Most every machine I've been on has both /bin/sh and /usr/bin/env, so it's a bit of a non-issue: but does anyone know what the 'correc

We've been trying to build a better radio system (JTRS) for over a decade. It's over budget, behind schedule, scaled back, and still not ready. At the current rate, the radios are going to cost over $30,000/each. I blame the Object Manageme

Everything there is an implementation of a full (i.e., turing complete) programming language. SQL is not Turing Complete (at least not without non-standard recursion extensions, if memory serves).

The best solution I've seen is a Maybe Monad. The problem is that unless your language has support baked in (a la Haskell) the syntax has way too much overhead. If you haven't played with Haskell, I thought this was a pretty good explanatio

Yeah, and those were the G1s. After the whole bad firmware thing, the G2s are even worse. Amazon doesn't have them in stock at all, they are $300 over MSRP at Newegg, and I haven't seen them for less than about 150% MSRP anywhere.

I've been trying to get an 80GB Intel X25-M G2 for a few days. They are going for well over double MSRP ($600 versus $230) at several retailers (e.g., http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167... )

Yeah, Java doesn't do multimethods (i.e., method dispatch based on runtime argument types). If Class X has two methods: void foo(Object i); void foo(Integer i); then: Object test = new Integer(4); X x = new X(); x.foo(test)

Completely free. I agree with you - we won't be raising money till after we launch and (hopefully) gain some traction. But one of our founders is handling the business side of things and really wants to get at least some rough numbers now.

If I take $100K from an angel no one is going to wonder why the angel isn't putting in $2Mil in the next round - angels just don't handle deals that big. If I take $100K from a VC and that VC opts not to put in another $2Mil, everyone will
