This is only true in our existing software ecosystem, where no one bothers to prove any of their assumptions hold (if they even realize they're making assumptions). In a software ecosystem designed with provable correctness in mind, op

1 MJ is enough to vaporize roughly half a liter of water that started at room temperature. That's nothing to sneaze at. Obviously you would need to do with a high rate (e.g. once per second) in order for it to be viable for power produ

The same could be said about sense of smell. And frankly any of the other senses. Even touch, if you realize that the atoms in your hand never really "touch" other objects.

If not for EVA encapsulation, silicon solar cells can be "recycled" by a 30 minute forming gas anneal at 400C. I don't know if all panels have EVA encapsulation or not. If so, then I doubt these ZnSb would degrade any better

This is quite fascinating, if true. Having studied solar photovoltaics fairly extensively in both undergrad and grad school, I'm a bit skeptical that he achieved such efficiency with such a simple design, but it's not completely i

I can certainly see how they might be related, but the answer doesn't clarify how---rather it seems completely disconnected in the first and second halves, which is why I'm wondering if it's just an editing error.

I'm curious why you think this. Is there some research to support this view? From what I've read, the placebo effect seems quite real, with quite physical effects. And the surgical placebo effect is stronger than the medicinal pla

Personally, I think our existing languages and tools are still too primitive to avoid rewriting considerable amounts of code as requirements change. At some level, rewriting is inevitable. We have developed some techniques for minimizing

Sigh As is the case for many academic initiatives and papers, this will never be commercially relevant. There's no need to make a flexible chip when you can make a half millimeter cube of silicon with far more computational power. It

It's perhaps worth noting that Starlink is about much more than network access in remote areas. The laser links between satalites should enable a considerable improvement in intercontinental transmission, both bandwidth and latency.

> STAR is not easier to implement than ordinal voting methods in general, it may be easier to implement than IRV [0] in particular. Likewise, while IRV is not district summarizable, some ordinal methods are. Could you provide an example?

No, it doesn't, but optimal voting under STAR is less dependent on other voters than in both Plurality and RCV systems. Under STAR voting, it would be far, far more practical to vote your conscience irrespective of how others are votin

Arrow's impossibility theorem does not apply to STAR voting. STAR voting is strictly more expressive than Ordinal Voting systems (i.e. RCV), while simultaneously being simpler to implement (and explain/understand). STAR voting als

Or perhaps we need to change our democracy to stop enforcing a duopoly. I firmly believe that widely implementing STAR Voting ( https://www.starvoting.us/ ) would fix a large swath of problems in politics and public policy.
