Nixos goes to a great length to steer towards reproduceability. They run builds in chroots, they set all ctime to past 0, they make all directories except the output directory read only, etc. But even then compilers have all sorts of quirks

I vaguely remember the C64 had something like this. You could move the cursor up to an old line, modify the line, then press RETURN to run it. Mind you I was like 8 years old.

You probably haven't used a Google branded Android phone in the last 3-4 years. Project Fi + Nexus 5X + Stock Android is as good as it gets in integration and UX. The other day I lost my phone so I typed "where is my phone" i

Its a question of terminology. When you are passively listening to (periodic) SSID beacons, you are not transmitting anything, nor consuming any energy on your radio. One could do that even in airplane mode. It's very different from wh

Yes, but that's the opposite end of the market (e.g. industrial pronting, very large size or volume). I am wondering if there is something in the middle.

Here is a (probably worthless) idea: Create 1 or 2 good, serviceable network printer and experiment with different business models like subscriptions or pay-as-you-print, where the printer manufacturer _owns_ the printer an office or home j

I am not a gamer, but when I play I go with indie games. I really enjoyed the visuals of "The Last Door" and "Fez" and "Superbrothers - Sword & Sworcery" much more so than any 3d game. The sad truth is 3D g

You are right that pricing on costs is not how it should work. A better pricing would be based on the value created. In this case however the value created correlates to the man hours saved (vs. e.g. managing instances manually without the

To answer my own question I have a Samsung ML-1520, a laser printer smaller than most laser printers on the market and lasts about forever. Haven't had to replace the toner cartridge yet. It's only missing the mac driver from the

Let me ask this: How much would anyone here pay for a quality printer that lasts virtually forever, has great software support across all platform and got cheap ink/toner that fits automatically replaced?

My mom worked in the printing industry with a company doing refills. She told me newer printers are hardwired to unrecoverably die after a fixed number of pages. Depending on the model you can even query how many pages you have left in the

I am all for doing things by standards, but to me this is de facto. No one uses case sensitive emails. If they did all sorts of weird things would happen: People couldn't log in, but other people could. There would be multiple accounts

If someone's valid email address [*\"32f2@13.31.43.11 they are up to no good and I don't want them as my customer. Also, according to the standard email addresses supposed to be case sensitive, since the username part refers

There is no economy without consumption and there is no consumption without waste. Incompatibility makes for a great waste. Edit: The technology industry needs things not to work for it to be profitable. Imagine if things just worked. Dropb

To think in terms of parametrizing containers I find the libcontainer spec [1] and runc to be way more useful than what docker has to offer. [1] https://github.com/opencontainers/runc/tree/master/libconta

Op here. Convenient setup and configuration (or DX in general) is what we are focusing on. We realized we are wasting a lot of valuable time on just configuring tools. Every person does this for every project. We spend more time on fiddling

As a sidenote, Australia moves about 7cm north annually [1], so any encoding of GPS location is not flexible enough in the long term. Also only encoding lat/long makes it so you would not be able to address a single floor in a large bu

Half joking, but if we all answered spam calls and just kept the call going without hanging up, as a result the total number of spam calls would go down and spammers' cost would increase.
