TLDR; Varnish is very proud they use memory-mapped files for cache, instead of managing RAM and disk cache separately. That said, don't overestimate the OS ability to understand your usage of RAM. The entity with highest insight on tha

I propose the article branches at this point as a set of selectable tabs, each labeled over a suitable set of properties describing the reader, and then offering a matching joke when you click the tab.

I'm fine with that premise: it's strange. But if you think about the implications of this strangeness, it can be equally interpreted as "Linus is playing a dangerous game" or "maybe we've kind of exaggerated th

We never did model strictly with trees IMHO. The closest I've seen is probably OOP widgets, but there it makes sense (and yes I've seen stupid stuff in those libraries, but in general they make sense).

We can throw all those properties in a database and we’re done. A name will never be exhaustive categorization, because we still need names to resemble "what it looks like" and "what it looks like" doesn't have to c

No one uses immutables to make sure they “get the same object”. What does that even mean?

Companies would lie less in public if the legal process was based on common sense. It is not. Everything you say is used against you.

Do you know when your boss says “just do x” and you get frustrated by him not realizing the difficulty or implications of his request? That’s us right now. Just add dot on the side of the app. There is one bar, to start with. Not two.

This argument would make sense only if being less popular meant being better at security than the popular apps...

Do I have to explain that giving something to a few key apps is much easier to control and analyze than giving it to thousand of obscure apps? It also gives more to the users - the feature is available in apps most of them use. Also this wi

Two dots would look like the camera is used by two apps. That’s not the scenario. Also I doubt Apple wants to turn the UI into a Morse code sequence to be deciphered by users.

When Apple tests new ground, only their apps have access to a feature. Then only partners. Then only approved developers. Etc. This gradual rollout allows refinement and reduces the odds of screwups. It looks unfair, but Apples goal isn’t t

Value types are essential element of design to me, but this is not widely recognized yet. To me it’d be like saying primitive types are not essential.

It’s called minification, not obfuscation. The goal is in the name. Of course it does also obfuscate to a point where large chunks of code are not easily reusable. You can still easily understand small snippets if you try.

Every time you rebuild a record you run through its constructor. I doubt this can be optimized the same as with a plain C struct. Eventually with some more evolution. But not yet.

Using immutables doesn’t mean you go full Haskell. Strings are also immutable you know.

So you reckon we only need immutability if two or more people have to work on code. Ok.

Java isn’t perfect. But you underestimate the amount of software written in it. Or even things like Python and JS which are a lot more basic but have similar elements in regards to their memory model. What do you use?

So even you, the master of great code, wrote bad code. I guess immutability is worth something then.

Apparently you don’t know most immutable structures are optimized for modified cloning in ways mutables aren’t.
