Generally new admins tend towards creating physical or virtual machines, logging in as root, editing files, starting services, and backing them up. Which is fine, a great way to learn, a less great way to be in production. Upgrades can be

You sound like you are on a good trajectory. I'd start reading up on and implementing a firewall. Start with host based, then on a router/vlan firewall. Try out wireshark and view things like a simple wget, file download, and s

Heh, my hacked version of this was used for apache logging. I just ran Mysql on top of a ZFS volume with compression turned on and had a column for timestamp, IP, referral IP, URL, action, and return code. I was amazed at how fast it was,

Happy user here. I started with 2 of the BT connected widgets, that used my phone to upload to the cloud. I then added to the Airthing View Plus which does wifi, BT, and if you plug a cable in will act as a gateway from bluetooth to the a

Queue a zillion posts about wanting dumb TVs. My suggestion is buy a Roku, don't give the TV an IP address, and run Netflix, Amazon Prime, Plex, Hulu, and whatever you want out of one of the biggest channel catalogs out there on the Ro

Not sure why the 95C thing is bad. If a chip has work to do and can control it's overclocking, why not have it stick to whatever safe temperature it wants?

I was impressed the 7950 did so well at 65 watts, 81% of the perf at 38% of the power. I'd expect the lower end chips with less cores to have even less of a compromise to get to 65 watts.

This is the first of what will be a series of posts on how to write async code in Rust. I come mostly from the world of JavaScript… so that is the perspective I will bring. I’ll be referencing back to how things might work in JavaScript as

That doesn't sound right. I drove from Sacramento (elevation 30 feet), over the sierras (7200 feet or so), across many mountain ranges in Nevada, through Utah, and through most of Wyoming and came nowhere close to running out of power

I did that, decades ago. Sieve is a very nice upgrade, safer, easier to read/write, and even had a web UI if you want.

Not sure exactly. But Backblaze has been pretty transparent on their approach. Backblaze takes user data, splits it into 17 pieces, add 3 pieces of redundancy, and split it across 20 racks. Backblaze has a tiered response system, my memor

My understanding is all the current plans have no ads and will not have ads going forward. There's a new cheaper tier coming with ads, that doesn't bother me. As long as I pay what I consider a fair price and see no ads I'l
