There's two aspects of the apple advantage for me. The first is apple hardware is reliably nice. It's just done right, with minimal corners cut. Full aluminum body (not plastic), great screen (bright, high resolution, great colo

Bandwidth on the macs is pretty good. M2 = 100GB/sec peak, M2 pro = 200GB/sec peak, M2 Max = 400GB/sec peak. A $3k lenovo thinkpad p16 uses DDR4-4800 or 76.8GB/sec peak. That also ignores the arm relaxes memory model,

I believe 4k pages works with Asahi Linux today. However the CPU can do 4k and 16k pages, the GPU is 16k pages only. So you give up accelerated 3D to run 4k pages.

Yes. Marcan, Asahi Lina, and related folks have been working on improving 3d accelerations. It's good enough for desktop use and some gaming so far, games like tuxracer, video playback, minecraft, etc. First the driver was in user sp

I read a bunch of posts on that thread, but it wasn't clear to me the setup. Certainly seems possible that different implementations would have different CPU utilization, and impact the power supply differently. Not to mention RF noi

Dunno, things are just starting. Ads benefit the ad network and the site. I don't see any reason GPT couldn't do similar.

I've always wished I could have an ad free internet experience, I'd happily pay whatever revenue the ads would have generated. Would it be terrible is GPT replaced ads with subscriptions? Of course they'd have to split the i

I think that was fixed a year or more ago. Just install new signal on new phone and when it launches it asks "migrate messages?". Click yes, the phone figure it out, and you approve the transfer on your old phone. I've done

It's pretty common to buy/beg/borrow an old cell phone and just use it over wifi. Especially kids or anyone who is tight on money. Food/water/shelter ranks much higher than cell service and monthly server + Data p

I do wonder whose fault it is though. Companies exist to make a profit. I'm sure some extra returns are caused by 3rd party laser and ink cartridges. I've personally seen a 3rd party toner cart have some kind of internal failure

Heh, well, seems silly to have a 2 channel standard, 4 channel standard, and TWO 8 channel standards. The volumes don't justify it, and it's just a big waste of money. It contributes to expensive motherboards among other thing

It does cost quite a bit more though. Otherwise everyone would ship 1k bit wide memory interfaces instead of 128 bit wide. Just look at the premium AMD and Intel charge for 256 bit wide memory, let alone 1024 bit wide. Xeon servers have 5

Depends, how cache friendly is your workload? The M1 ultra has more than 4x the memory bandwidth of the threadripper. Of course the GPU makes a big difference in cost and power use. If you need a 4090, there's nothing comparable. B

Dunno, M1 max (400GB/sec twice a threadripper) fits in a thin laptop, performance well, and has a decent iGPU. That's more bandwidth than a threadripper, better iGPU then anything Intel/AMD ships, and still sips on the power

Not to mention XboxX and PS5, both use flavors of the AMD APU/iGPU. Sad that cheap consoles have better memory systems than any normal AMD/Intel box short of a Xeon, Epyc, or Threadripper.

I was trying to shop various higher end intel iGPUs. Generally the premiums were so high than a low end Nvidia was much faster AND cheaper. They were somewhat lower power, but it was a pretty narrow space where Intel had the advantage.
