I read this book and, to be honest, did not enjoy it very much. It consists largely of profiles of people involved in this sort of philanthrocapitalism. The main theme seems to be that the ultra-wealthy have coopted the work of social insti

"The mass media was completely played by the GRU and wrote the stories they wanted after the DNC and Podesta disclosures. You could argue that this was much more impactful than the IRA disinfo, and there has been almost no self-reflect

These are some remarkable poems. I feel lucky that someone took the time to translate and share these poems on the internet where they can find a wider audience.

Fair point. I thought it was super strange that a book review would get flagged but didn't consider the fact that it was controversial.

I don't believe the author of this review is a regular contributor to the Times. I agree with you though, I very much enjoyed this piece.

This comment betrays a remarkable ignorance of mental illness. There is, in fact, a link between the commencement of a course of antidepressants and suicide, but to claim that "...mental illness is created as a result of these Big Phar

"Excuses for why shitty code is in production are probably legitimate excuses" Honestly, I don't think this is true in the general case. It's certainly true that there are times when deadlines mean code quality is going

Kind of a random one but Coursera's Audio Signal Processing for Music Applications was a ton of fun. I had basically no exposure to either the signal processing or the music side of this course and still learned a ton. Inspired me to m

Kind of a strange read. I'm a huge fan of Coetzee, but I'm more interested in these photographs for what they can tell me about Coetzee the author (biographically) than I am in their artistic merits. The author of this article see

Another great vim option is vimwiki: https://github.com/vimwiki/vimwiki At a glance it supports all of the features provided by vim-orgmode, but it will probably never be as fully featured as emacs' orgmode

Pretty great article. I wonder how common this man's experience is; specifically that his identity as a Jew is defined in some way by oppression. I was raised as a Jew in New York and hardly saw any overt antisemitism (the few times I

I don't think anyone was describing anyone as hard-working. I'm sure the rich are also a mixed bag when it comes to how hard-working they are. If it skews more in one direction or the other depending on which group we're talk

That's actually the point the previous poster is trying to make. It's easy to have an inclusive society when everyone in that society is the same, and it's difficult to have one when there is so much cultural variation within
