It'd be interesting to see a cost comparison to the USSR's program around the same time, leading up to the development of the first Soviet nuclear bomb.

I've found Beancount [1] to be a nicer version of Ledger. It is similar syntax but it enforces rigid rules to ensure you don't make as many mistakes. You can also use Fava [2] as a nice local web-based account browser. [1] http:&

Seems so. Honest question: what's to stop the manufacturer (or anyone who knows the manufacturer) from making copies and selling them themselves? Do business owners who sell this sort of thing on Amazon just have to stay ahead of the c

I've been using first party isolation ever since it was ported from Tor. It's excellent, but be aware that it breaks stuff, usually JavaScript, on about 5% of websites (anecdata). I find this to be well worth it, especially to fin

I went to university intending to study computing science, but switched to physics half way through under the assumption that you could teach yourself computing science more easily than physics. I wouldn't change what I learned for the

I guess, meet and exceed housing demand and improve less affluent areas. This involves government money but most seem happy to let the public take the bill in the form of continuously inflating house prices instead.

Three or four more detectors is definitely not easy. The current ones were built, tuned and retuned over 25 years, and with approximately $1B spending on the US side alone (ignoring efforts in Europe, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Malaysia, etc

Agreed. The "secrecy" thing is just hyperbole from New Scientist. What LIGO are doing with their data is completely standard practice in the community.

Recaptcha is a horrible experience if you block tracking. Sometimes I fill in literally 10 pages of CAPTCHAs and it still can't work out if I am a bot or not. It's not even clear to me why having tracking cookies is even a sign th

I am ignorant of this particular aspect of C and most of C in general, but shouldn't the kernel developers try to follow the C standard instead of just a compiler's?
