There is a solution, but it involves the rich paying more tax to rebalance society and boost social mobility. We've not tried everything, we've just tried most of the things that don't involve rocking the boat.

Thanks everyone for their replies! It looks like there is a lot to offer that I didn't consider. It seems clear that you must choose carefully though... and the environmental impact still makes me balk.

I guess I want a holiday where I immerse myself in a new place (not that that is easy these days). Hearing and seeing people from my country reminds me I'm not immersed.

Slightly off-topic, but given the brevity of the linked blog post and the lack of conversation here, why not. Can anyone explain to me the appeal of cruises? You're stuck on a boat with thousands of other people as you are taken to pre

I spent a year making a replacement for our internal notes system composed as a custom Lotus Notes application. It feels so good to be free of it now.

Maybe spammers check if an email address is legitimate by checking HIBP. A pretty significant fraction of legitimate email addresses probably do show up in at least one list.

This isn't just a historical phenomenon, given that the Millennium Dome (opened in 2000) was also granted one. I wonder what the point of it is - are local governments in the UK not allowed to gift or sell land, only lease it?

It's not in a language I've ever used (furthermore, I explicitly mentioned beginners in my comment).

Ideally the defaults should be sensible. I have found they mostly are, except the f-string one.

I love f-strings. I just wish tools like pylint would shut up when I pass f-strings to the logging module. I as the developer understand and accept the extra nanosecond of processor time to parse the string that might not be logged anywhere

Without wanting to ignite a debate about the walrus operator (and having not read any of the arguments), I can guess why there was one. It's not clear to me what it does just from reading it, which was always one of Python's begin

Indeed. I don't click videos in public when browsing on my phone because I hate hearing random videos from others. Text should always accompany videos.

Pass is great, I moved to it from KeePass about a year ago and have never looked back. It uses your gpg key to encrypt passwords and syncs via git. Ridiculously simple and cloud nonsense free.

The UK does have nuclear power. As far as I recall it's about 20%, gas is around 40% and the rest is hydro and wind. But before anyone argues about whether to increase nuclear or not, realise that the UK is one of the best places in th

Is this not something to do with the new Mac Pro?

by sleavey 7y ago
Doubtful. They are giving all the proceeds to Extinction Rebellion, only selling it for 18 days, and in the past they've sold albums as "pay what you want". This is typical Radiohead.

The person describing the stand said it generates lots of heat so they need to put a (fancy looking) heat sink on the back. If you take their advice and chain 6 of these to one Mac Pro, what sort of heat output do you get?
