This reads like it made things worse: > There was an unexpected consequence: By automating the laborious parts of my work, I had, in turn, filled my day with more laborious parts. > A menial task that took me 5 minutes once or twice a

There used to be a link next to every Google search result where you could view Google’s cached copy of that page. Also, Google News used to have a snippet from each article. You also used to be able to read a lot more of an indexed book on

Maybe we could find common ground in hating the AI gold rush/arms race? If people weren't in such a huge hurry to build it out as fast as possible, maybe there would be more time to figure out how do things right? Seen from that p

This is vague, but I think the idea is to have a lot more surveillance of what AI agents are doing. And since the logs are boring, using AI to check the logs. Will this work? One thing it has going for it is that for an LLM, there is no suc

The Gates Foundation also put a lot of money into education in the US, but my understanding is that it’s had mixed results. Public health seems to be easier.

Yes, when you buy a house it’s usually because the buyer and seller agreed to it. It seems better than, say, a foreclosure or an eviction.

What do you think of Anubis and Cloudflare? If they block your bot, is that unethical? Seems like doing business with other people should normally be based on mutual consent, not whatever you can get away with technically.

Why should we believe that Starship launch costs will be that cheap when we don't believe Musk's other numbers? Where does that number come from? Has anyone looked into it? It doesn't cover launch costs directly, but here

The "guardrails" are bloat if you're using a proper sandbox. This seems like a matter of using the right harness for the environment it's running in, rather than one always being better than the other.

If you're open to using remote Linux VM's and a web-based interface, I quite like exe.dev and Shelley.

Yes, that makes more sense. AI is the continuation of automation. I don’t think it’s going to eliminate management entirely, but you can certainly get to the point where the owner is basically just an investor and they hire a professional m

It seems like if real estate becomes a more uncertain investment, it has more to do with climate change than AI.

This suggests to me more separation into industrial versus residential areas. (Or what is the mining for?) Historically, mechanized agriculture allowed most people to move to cities, then to suburbs. Industry became globalized and off-shore

That's getting way ahead of ourselves considering that currently, AI can't even be trusted to run a vending machine. Also, if that's such a great deal, why not invest in someone else's company that runs a farm? Let'

I don't see why we should take that scenario seriously. In part because agriculture is already heavily mechanized and many factories already have lots of robots. How much would access to an LLM improve the robots?

Suppose we modeled this as two separate countries: * AI Island: just runs AI in data centers. * Elsewhere: same as now. Wouldn't there be gains from trade? Sure, AI Island might be able to provide lots of cheap Internet services, but y

They know it's a temporary job going in, though. How is this different than having an intern? If they're not using this opportunity to train other staff then that seems like a management problem.

Oddly, for some companies, the money comes from advertisers. When this started becoming a thing, I figured it would be a bubble and eventually businesses would wise up, but they've kept on paying for decades now.

In China, after the collapse of a dynasty, there eventually was another dynasty. It wasn’t the same rulers, but a similar pattern recurred. Also, the Roman Empire had terrible civil wars and recovered. Until it didn’t.

In ancient times, wealth was based on controlling farmland and extracting food from peasants. Modern economies don’t work like that, so what you can learn from historical analogies is limited.

Yes, the transactions are real, but trades are based on speculation and market cap is an extrapolation of much smaller trades. The transactions are just as real for Bitcoin or a meme stock.
