Interesting. They're using V8 but I don't think they're using Node.js... they seem to have a custom made solution on top of V8.

App Engine has a real solid infrastructure. I find it that it's extremely good at hiding implementation details - I don't care whether my database is Mongo or MySQL, I just want it to work and scale. The APIs never break and it's really che

I've been thinking about this for a while as well. It came down to two laptops: MacBook Air 13" and Lenovo ThinkPad X1. The X1 has a wonderful keyboard. As a developer I like this. However I'm really a unix sort of person and installing L

Even a whiteboard can be ignored. In fact, anything can be ignored if you're lazy. This tool seems to at least do something different such as watching your progress add up, but at the end of the day it's really up to you to do the task :)

I don't see why someone would consider executing their script on your server rather than their server. If it's just for fun, I don't see the fun in sharing random scripts - GitHub is already a full-blown library repository to find the scrip

I don't know what big sites use App Engine but I personally use it for everything. Every weekend project, every work prototype, everything! I just love the fact that it's free to start with, and the idea that it's on Google's server sort of

Dynamically typed languages offer a lot of benefits and a lot of burdens. Only you can judge whether you're willing to take those risks. Personally I am more comfortable with dynamically typed languages as they feel more natural and less

Why do you think JavaScript cannot handle it? If you reach the million lines of code you probably have a really modular application, otherwise it's unmaintainable in any language. Being modular it can be sub-divided in many small layers whi

I was never able to personally judge that statement. My experiences show that the flexibility of JavaScript only improved maintainability of the software written in it. http://npmjs.org/ is a list of solid software (also large software) w

Frankly I really like JavaScript. I don't want the language to change, even though it has its flaws. I just love the ability to have data-structures as simple as objects and arrays which have evolved into a standard data exchange format (JS

That's true about EC2. However if you're using an E-commerce framework that is done well, for example a Java one that uses JDA/JDO for storage and abstracts all I/O into a datastore, you could very well use it on App Engine. And also, App E

Just like internet providers are blocking the BitTorrent protocol they could just as well block BitCoin. And governments can do anything until we free ourselves from internet provides and just live in a huge mesh wireless network. :)

The major thing that will influence the success of your Web startup is if you have fun making it. So you need to choose a language that is fun using, that will let you prototype things quickly and that you feel comfortable with. This langua
