Interesting what the http://isitchristmas.com/ site is doing. It's using websockets. Anyone can figure it out?

The important bit is that HTML5 is a set of standard abstractions around complicated things, such as networking and data-storage, that should almost never be re-built from scratch by the developer. It is extremely important that we build

The fact that Lua isn't very much used will get you less users. I feel like something like JavaScript would've been more appropriate for this kind of thing. Maybe you should allow different languages? Lua is quite similar to JS, so you can

With the Java API you can write code that is standard (JDO/JPA for database stuff), that works across any Java environment. So it doesn't lock you in if you write your code in a smart way.

Do you guys think this movement can be applied to a team of people that are not developers? My team is mostly managers, scientists and marketing experts. They outsource most of the technicalities such as coding. So I wonder how you can get

This is all very inspiring and nice, but I hate it that all of his examples deal with variables that contain numbers. With numbers it's easy. You can use sliders to increase and decrease their value. You can see a little preview of the valu

I don't get this. How do you handle POST/PUT/DELETE requests with files? It doesn't say much about it in the README.

I totally agree that CoffeeScript brings a lot to the table compared to old feature-less JavaScript. But the author is talking about readability of the language, and not about the features that it has. The problem that he points out about "

These are the kind of ideas every software developer should practice with. Forget the technicalities: the programming languages, the databases, the frameworks. A good piece of software is not judged by its code, but by its interface. Every

The biggest issue with this is, how do you keep it clean? I wouldn't want to sleep somewhere that wasn't kept clean. Sure you sleep on train seats that are publicly shared with hundreds of different people daily. But here we're talking abou

But is there a "Hacker News Manifesto"? No there isn't. HN is what it is because of the community. Sure, there should be moderators to control the profanity level. But overall, if content is interesting and it's up-voted, it means it's mean

I find it weird that the rover wouldn't have enough storage to hold both the logics of the landing and the surface mission. I mean, SSDs nowadays can hold hundreds of gigs and are very small. Does anybody have more details on that? A comple

The current HTML/CSS of HN acts as an API for third-party services and apps that depend on HN's data. If you change this API, you break all these services. So in my opinion, it's not worth the change.

I would personally rather see something like a space habitat before colonizing Mars. If we can artificially replicate Earth's environment in space, then we're set, we could drift through space when our solar system becomes too hot and ensur

Consider the frailty of our planet. The speck of dust that it is compared to the depths of the universe. If we don't start colonizing other planets, and gain the experience on how to do so, we'll essentially become extinct quite rapidly.

What's your judgement of something 'working'? Maybe many companies are failing because their hiring is limited to a specific academic category. Whilst startups with much less budget surpass them, because they're not limited to anything. You

I couldn't agree more, however, if humans are too expensive, I still don't mind the robots getting there first. The moon landing was an outcome of the cold war. I find it hard happening again. Sending humans all the way to Saturn - it is
