I agree with you. Inventing a new business model is difficult and can take a lot of time. While keeping a website like twitter up takes a lot of money, so they do not have the luxury to keep working on this new business model. I guess to su

When you say the algorithm affects 0.3% of searches on google do you mean you select each query with a probability of 0.003 and pass it through this algo, or this algo is used 100% of the time when query A is followed by query B and these c

Academia has the same incentive system as other fields, i.e., a combination of money/fame/power and all three comes from doing great research. Great research will get you the citations regardless of the number of former students. Also numbe

Well the price did come very close to $38 several times (twice before 12:00 and then during the flat part at 3:34 that you mentioned) but the price never crossed below $38. This does show a lot of resistance/support at $38

If you want to build a sustainable business you should keep up the discipline of living within your means and grow slowly through the bubble. If you want to make money rite now (and lots of it) ride with the bubble. The answer depends on wh

I agree with both of you that there will always be bubbles but recently bubbles have moved from one industry to another. e.g., savings and loans -> tech -> housing etc. I am just arguing that maybe the tech bubble on 2010s wont be a

Well I agree that there are many signals pointing towards a bubble (as david points out in his post). I don't think it will be as bad as the late 90s. Memories of the last tech bubble and the recent recession will hopefully dampen the rise

Yes, you are correct but you dont want to persevere to solve problems that are not important. From what I understand japhyr is saying that experience helps you choose these important problems from a set of all possible problems you can solv

You are correct that "The CEO's job is to allocate resources to initiatives that will make the company money" and with driverless cars and google glasses the CEO is doing exactly that. Also people working on these projects are scientists at

I work in an academic setting and most of us use writing to convey our ideas and use the speaking opportunity to advertise the things we have written about. So a good academic speech needs to have low idea density to serve its purpose. It s

Your point #5 about transparency may not be true all the time. Strict policies force consistency and some level of transparency at big companies while the ad-hoc nature of start ups makes it really easy to hide information. In a badly run s

Creativity and success are two different things. Without a team Woz would not have been as successful as he is today but he would still have been an insanely creative mid-level manager at HP.

The version used by Sebastian targets a wider audience who are not familiar with the pythonic idioms and have just skimmed a bit of python to do the course. Using a loop over array index is the way many students iterate over an array. This

Different fields have different acceptable levels of significance. Social science and engineering fields generally except significance at 95% or 99% levels , physics has higher standards.

As someone working in the field of earthquake engineering this is very scary for me. Earthquakes are caused due to buildup of stress between two giant pieces of rocks trying to slide past each other. A swarm of small earthquakes can sometim

This is the deal which firmly cements my belief that there is a big big bubble. Anyone with the technical skills and idea to launch a tech startup should collect the cash now. Act fast, at this rate the foolish money wont last long.

I am a bit skeptical about the advertised price tag of $30. Last time when they released a $30 computing device(in 2009, see http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/02/indias-10-lapto/ ) it was just a glorified box with 2GB memory. I wonder h
