This one is from 2005. But IIRC it launched Gawande's career, and I think it's a great read. I saw him talk a few years after this. Very inspirational!

I believe in this case that "continued employment" is considered to be the benefit derived by the employee. Meaning "sign this or we will terminate you" is basically an ok thing to say, at least in some states.

I can think of a bunch of reasons why one might end up in such a situation, all of which point to systemic failures to protect the free movement of people: 1) Unfamiliarity with the law. People moving from states which protect the marketpl

I've been following and advocating for the Green Line Extension, a major transit expansion in the Boston area. I've been working on this for about 7 years now, through three different project teams, and I can say for certain that

It's been good for me! I don't miss Chrome at all. Plus the "send tab to device" is pretty sweet (if not exactly new or original).

> Consumers are being informed right now. A scandal can kill a company or a private inspector in a way that it can't kill a corporate oligarchy or bad regulation. I'm not convinced. Scandals don't scale. How many scandal

There already is a "Ministry of Truth", as you put it. The point of the article is that Facebook _already_ picks and chooses which shared items it promotes into your feed, so the news you get exposed to is already the product of

I'm of the uninformed opinion that any national election will probably have a Condorcet winner. IF that's true, then we could literally pick any Condorcet method, and just go with that. Condorcet IRV seems a reasonable choice, in

It's a bit complicated by the location where they must be built - essentially into the side of a 1-to-1 slope rocky hillside. At least that's what the government claims is the reason for the expense. It still seems a pretty toug

My city just passed a bond measure which includes $36MM for a 300 space parking garage for the high school and city hall, literally meters from where a new light rail stop will be built. 25% of the city's families don't own a car

"N = 23; Full Scale IQ" Enough for me to pretty much stop reading right there. Isn't 23 far too small? If there is signal there, you probably need more samples to draw it out.

I'm not sure it's pedantry. We're so used to the pretty Hollywood storyline that I think people assume that any climate issue will just turn out okay in the end. But of course, Nature doesn't have the capacity for happ
