Depends on the school. The general rule of thumb is about 1/3rd to the inventors themselves, 1/3rd to the department, 1/3 to the school.

$100M-500M gets thrown around [1] but it's hard to find good data. This might seem not too high, but many drugs fail, and often fail at the most costly step (phase III). So you have to be sure to factor that failure rate in. [1] http

This is not only allowed, it's encouraged by legislation called the Bayh-Dole Act. The general thought is that there would be no incentive for anyone to do clinical trials on the drug, which can get quite expensive, if they don't

A TA is a graduate student who is also pursuing a doctoral degree. I don't think it's fair to compare this to a job in a private industry.

Unfortunately, your facts are wrong. This retirement mess came about because both the state and UC stopped contributing to the UC Retirement fund in 1990. That went on for 20 years, until UC restarted it in 2010; the state is still not con

This sounds nothing like the experience of where I am at (UCLA) in terms of grant pressure. I don't think the UK has tenured positions though.

To be more accurate, the UC pay increases were for the 3 lowest paid chancellors 20%, and one other 5%. All three were the lowest paid chancellors amongst the 100 or so AARU universities. UC system schools are still on the lower end of the

I've looked into these numbers and it's really hard to parse what revenues and expenses are coming from their journal publishing. The publishers listed are also have huge amounts of revenue in textbooks and other book markets (to

It's mostly the high editorial costs. Especially for the academic glamour journals, they are only accepting a small percentage of the manuscripts that come their way. It's a little silly though; they still charge hundreds to thous

I've been really impressed with Nautilus. Awesome to have a new magazine that seriously covers scientific topics, and do it quite well and with style.

This is such a tragedy. I think a couple of comments should be made. First, we truly lost a fantastic member of the stem cell community. His lab produced some of the most ambitious and amazing directed differentiation of stem cells into ne

You are right. I think we would all appreciate making more stuff that we do automatable and outsourceable. I guess where I was trying to go with the comment is that it would be nice if there were similar tools for design and analysis. Oh a

This is a huge donation for the Broad and probably equals all their previous fundraising. I think a lot will ask if it's too much to one institute or too little to solve the problem, but overall I'm very excited. Biology is changi

Considering the administration's public statements in the past, this would have been a pretty surprising pick for them. How sure were people about the nominee. Also, anyone know anything about the acting director from google?

The government is the dominant funder of stem cell research post-Bush (In addition to state funding of stem cell research like inNY, TX, & CA). For example, see http://stemcells.nih.gov/Pages/Default.aspx I think

That just means that there is room for a company to develop and create better dispatch software for the taxi industry, not that all regulation should be decimated to make dispatching better.

I've been in and out of half a dozen labs around the country (and have one of my own now) and this is the craziest story I've ever heard of. It's hard to imagine how one creates a culture like that in the lab; sounds awful.
