Or a middle ground: "I'm sorry Mr. Godin, I don't know if there's anything I can do to take care of that for you but I'll do what I can." Merely acknowledging the problem, taking some responsiblity even by association changes the tone of th

There are instructions for visiting 4chan upthread, it's extremely NSFW. http://status.4chan.org/ is a SFW status blog which will check if sites are 'up' from your browser, "img" is the server that hosts /b/ (and /r9k/ as well I believe).

I paid for a year's subscription to the FT back when I had time in the mornings to sit and read it. Nice and relaxing but I realized I got most of my news via google reader anyway so knew most of the headlines before I opened it. Anyway I c

Q: Will we get a discount at Amazon? No, because we are planning on continuing to run Zappos as a separate company with our own culture and core values. And we're not going to be giving the Zappos discount to Amazon employees either, unles

Well its my first blackberry and I've only had a week or so to get used to the platform so YMMV of course. tl;dr: It's great at its core competencies: voice and email are great. Everything else is a bit unfinished. The bottom line is that s

What's the joke about the Medal of Honor recipients meeting? They all think it's a mistake for them to be around all these heroes. Heroes are heroes precisely because they don't find their actions heroic. My take anyway.

I'll take a crippled phone any day over the other complaints (and if my Tour is crippled it's subtle enough that I haven't seen it). There are no perfect carriers but there are less-bad ones.

As loathe as I am to admit it (and I still won't recommend or adminster it) Exchange is reasonably decent for the end user. You need to keep a sacrificial Windows install/VM for the rare cases you need an Outlook-specific feature but most o

Depending on your definition of "tv" I may or may not have one. I do own a digital tuner and a projecter and they are technically hooked up but I only actually used it once to verify that it worked. I find the extra effort of turning on the

Right. Rectennas ought to be able to get vastly higher efficiency numbers (Wackypedia claims 90% but its un-cited) than solar panels (~40%, again Wikipedia).

My non-expert understanding is that the efficiencies come out better in the big picture despite adding a conversion step. You can get maximum sun time in space for the solar component and have a very cheap and very efficient rectenna on the

No first hand experience here but my understanding is that HDFS and Hadoop in general are geared towards high-throughput and not necessarily low latency. You'll likely have to put a caching layer in front of it if this is still [1] the case

Add NaCl for heavier apps and a NaCl'd VDI or similar client and there's really nothing you can't theoretically do given enough bandwidth.

There's some speculation[1] at metafilter that the prices and stock percentages involved might make TPB a majority stakeholder in GGF. [1] http://www.metafilter.com/82889/Pirate-AB#2629173

I know you don't mean it this way but this sounds like SQL databases can magically index their data without scanning it. Add a new index to a large table in any RDBMS and it'll do exactly what you're describing. Query on an un-indexed colum

Give people credit, even if they don't deserve it. This, a thousand times this. I'm constantly surprised by the effect that a simple, heartfelt "good job" can have on motivation. I'm regularly surprised by the effect it has on me . We're

Not only execution but execution in the right direction. Amazon succeeded in part because they picked a target (sheer volume and efficiency) and drove singlemindedly towards it. Ditto companies like WalMart and FedEx. Other companies have e

I don't like capping, sometimes there are truly exceptional comments that deserve 99.9%ile rankings. What about some form of logarithmic decay? Perhaps the first upvote should not be worth the same as the 101st.

It's a community attempting to define its norms. I'd rather have "this is not an appropriate post for this site" upvoted to the skies than nearly silent removals of content deemed unacceptable or a ten page "me too!" AOLgasm.

Ehm, I'm by no means a security expert but Matasano's overview [1] of the security model seemed to throw some sizable monkey wrenches into the works. Has Google addressed those criticisms? [1] http://www.matasano.com/log/1674/the-security-
