I find it quite normal that one of the more tech-literate forums on the internet would see through the obvious bs coming out of blockchain advocacy. HN readers are probably more likely than the average person to understand how blockchain a

Yeah I think it's quite different from baseball cards. There the authenticity of the physical item is quite a part of the value proposition. People want to own the the actual original which was part of the print run in whatever year.

This is a terrible analogy. A house is a finite asset which only one person can occupy at a time. An infinite number of copies of a JPEG can exist. The city/state has the power to enforce property rights. The blockchain does not.

Do you actually understand the value of any of that or are you just parroting something you read? What is web 3 and what concrete benefits will it provide?

It just seems stupid not to learn from one's mistakes. We already know these kinds of activities are problematic and amount to theft, so it's comical to see people saying this is our financial "future" when it's hu

It's probably the majority opinion on HN that these NFT's are a total farce. A dismissive take is more substantive than the crypto "advocates" who pile into these threads and submit paragraphs of nonsense.

1. You can already donate to an artist you like through a platform like Patreon 2. If it's a feature of a social network, don't you already need a central authority? What's the value of an NFT then rather than just an entry

You haven't given examples of financial innovation which started out as crimes. You've given examples of crimes which have since been regulated against and better controlled.

What does that even mean?

Agreed. Crypto has just been a fertile ground to replay every innovation in financial crime and fraud which had already been regulated against in other markets.

I mean what is the value of having NFT's at all? Fraud and price inflation might be solvable problems, but it still seems like you have the core issue that there's no underlying value to the asset at all. And that's not even

Yeah I don't know if it's the same everywhere, but the concept of how medical residency is handled in the US is just insane.

Another perplexing one is hospitals. Sleep is one of the most important factors in self-healing. However for someone in a long hospital stay, rooms often don't get completely dark, there are machines which make noise and light, and p

Yes I quite like the metaphor that our rational mind acts largely as the press secretary for our emotions.

I think you cannot control how you are made, but you can control what you do with it. It's up to you to figure out how to put yourself in situations where your personality will be an asset rather than an obstacle. As far as emotions l

Yeah this is a lesson I learned during the NBA playoffs sometime in the mid 00's - I was supporting the Cavs, and the whole series was hanging on a 3 foul shots by Lebron James. I was watching in a bar, and was super agitated along wi

I watched a Robert Sapolsky lecture which made a lot of sense on this topic. His point was that our psychological reactions to things evolved because they were useful to our ancestors, but not necessarily because they are useful to us . T

Not only that, but here you're talking about increasing the cost of advertising exponentially. The closest thing we have to what's being described here is a video game. 3D game development is one of the most difficult and unforgi

The touch bar was just awful. Not only did it lack software support, but occasionally it would just become non-responsive. And that's really bad when you are trying to mute or turn the volume down quickly, and you have to wait a coup

Yeah it was a bit of a head-scratch moment when those 2016 machines came out. Until then it seemed like you could just trust a macbook pro to be a great machine that could do everything you need, and that each edition would get better than

I don't think it's a fair characterization. I think just about everyone can infer how shields work after watching this movie. I think the issue is you can watch the film as many times with as much attention as you want, and with

Yeah I think you could have gotten very far with a light touch here. For instance, just a few well-placed character moments between Paul and his father would have heightened the impact of what happens later in the film. And maybe also a f

Yeah at least the david lynch opening sets the stage, but I think you could do better than just direct exposition from a floating head. For instance maybe have a voice over while showing a navigator use the spice to travel safely in space.

I find that rust playgrounds and inline tests are a good solution for trying out snippets. With rust-analyzer, you can run a test via an LSP code-action from right inside the file you're working on, so it's a nice lightweight way
