Google employees have root on their devices, unless it's a chromebook pixel for some reason. If you root that you can't use the corp network. Not sure why, since you have root on any other kind of laptop you might get from corp.

It's almost as if different people have different opinions, and HN is a place we can come to discuss them. Or something.

You are misinformed. Goole Compute Engine was announced almost a year ago, and it is none of this.

Could you explain more what you mean? I'm tempted to dismiss it, but I don't actually understand your point so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt until I do.

So, it seems likely that culture fit was not a problem. In general if you get one interview that results in a weak no-hire, you need a couple strong-hires to balance it out. If you get one with a confident no-hire, that's it.

Lower-level management is drawn from the same pool as the engineers. For upper-level, Google does not have the luxury of getting one thousand credible and serious applicants every week, so the process necessarily differs.

There is no feedback expected from those lunches. But you're right, they are tests... for the candidate to test Google.

This is a bad strategy. One thing that actually helps you tremendously is evidence of growth. The easiest way for the hiring committee to see this is for you to show improvement from a previous interview. I guess it'd be possible to ga

You seem to think a Google SRE is something like a sysadmin. This is not true.

No. The UK government doesn't get to remove things, it just has an expedited way to get the removal requests in front of Google employees who can remove things.

I don't understand how 2FA completely counters this scam. Consider if you called someone up and told them your password, and then gave them an up-to-date number from your OTP generator. Except instead of calling them up, you're en

I just think that a promotion shouldn't automatically entail moving into management. At my company the engineer ladder and the management ladder are different (though you can transfer between them if you like). I can get promoted 5 mor

My point was that the arguments presented were not the reasons that using floats to handle finance was a bad idea. Since, as I showed, they also applied to integers.

Could make all the same arguments against integers: - Limited precision, - Some numbers aren't representable, - Go try adding 1 to itself over and over again. That said, yes, floats are a bad idea for financial arithmetic.

There was no implication that the Randian titans were inspired by Rand. Only the implication that they lived by her ideals. That, of course, can happen before she actually articulates them.

It's your right to complain about Youtube quality these days (from what I understand ISPs tend to throttle them mercilessly), but it was clearly an extremely good buy for Google, and Google makes tons of money off of Youtube ads. When

Now that I read the article, seems like they're merging all the regexps into one, which really could be O(n). However, the trie will not be O(log n). You have to at least look at every character in the input, so there's a hard O(n
