I'm a generic backend Java programmer (plus a smattering of other languages, but mostly use Java). I've worked with a wide range of tech: from you're basic web stacks, to more complicated stacks, consumer facing stuff, all th

I don't generally click the links, but if I see something I like, I'll google it or go directly to the site. As for if advertisers "see" their ad being blocked: it depends on the way the ad is being blocked / served

Which is nuts when you think that something like ~70% of twitch users have an active ad-blocker.

Google shuts services down left and right. What large business would trust google with all their documents / spreadsheets / etc. when there is a pretty good chance they just shut the service down in a few years? Microsoft on the o

As a low level individual contributor, unless the micro-promotion comes with a pay raise, the title changes are just patronizing IMO.

Or you could just use it occasionally when you want to give your kids a bit more freedom than normal, but you're still a bit of a worrier. There is a state between complete lack of oversight and Black Mirror's Arkangel.

The worst part about taxes is that I never know if I did them correctly since the feedback loop is up to 3 years. Just shoot them off into the ether and cross your fingers you don't get a giant bill next year. The first time I filed, I

For each of the three locations I mentioned, you also need to contact the portable ECG with your finger. The finger is being used to create a closed loop. It is not a measurement site.

One thing to note: portable ECGs are <$100 on amazon. Not as feature rich as the apple watch, sure, but the watch only measures from one location, normally you want to measure from a few, usually at least 3: leg, arm, and chest.

True, but that's why I'm saying it doesn't sit right with me. I'm not debating what the law is. I'm saying, in my opinion, businesses should be allowed to refuse types of payments.

This doesn't sit right with me. If someone comes in with thousands of pennies am I allowed to refuse that type of payment? As a business, if I don't want to deal with the overhead of handling cash, I shouldn't have to. It fee

In NYC I have had the exact opposite experience. Cashiers routinely process 2 or 3 card payments while they politely ask the odd person rummaging around their wallet for cash to step to the side. Plus they have to mess around with change on

I wonder what would be cheaper for Google, et al.: paying lots of engineers to bug hunt all day, or simply going out and buying a bunch or all of the high profile bugs from shady websites and then just publishing them.

I mean, if you ban the largest manufacturer of any highly addictive substance, the next companies in line will obviously thrive, right? If you banned the sale of soda, local sodas will still thrive.

JC Penny almost went bankrupt when they tried to stop doing sales all the time and just charge fair prices. People want sales, even if the item isn't really cheaper.

Student loans don't go away in bankruptcy, even private ones. There is no risk even if you loan a poor student $150k to go to art school since you have the rest of their life to garnish wages from them.

IIRC the android revenue is rolled into the x-box revenue under some nebulous category when they break out revenue in their earning (forget the exact title). This hides the massive losses they are taking on x-box and all things x-box relate

I feel like there is less of a stigma for older contractors. Might be a good idea if you’re getting older in a tech career to shift from full time to contract work?

So they got an exclusive deal with a Counter Strike league (ESEA?) and I decided to watch some matches... Horible experience. Just god awful. Forced chat showing, emojis everywhere, no theater mode, like 15 FPS and choppy as hell. Pure crap

+1 for autonomous. I bought the standard one offered on their site for $300 and I have two vesa mounted monitors and a desktop tower on my desk. Nothing wobbles. Extremely stable. Very satisfied with the setup.

More than 50% of commuters drive to work alone in NYC? That seems insane to me. I don't know or know of a single person that drives to work in NYC. Tolls and parking alone would eat around $10k per year, plus even if it was free the tr
