Interesting read. When it comes down to it the answer seems to be that JavaScript needs to have support added for explicit parallelism. But isn't this what we're supposed to get with HTML5 web workers? It shouldn't be hard to write a utilit

There are definitely some exceptions -- it's what I do for a living. And yeah, this is big news in the space. Google is clearly making a move into online display advertising, having all but conquered direct-response. It'll be interesting to

The app and this writeup of it are both awesome. A friend pointed me at Turntable today and I hung out there all afternoon at work -- it's a great replacement for Pandora for coding music. The human factor keeps it unpredictable and you can

To find the one that helps them the most? Not everyone learns in the same way, and not everyone teaches in the same way. The more choices you have, the more likely you are to hit on the one that lets you really grok something.

This is nitpicky, but shouldn't the title (on Ars I guess, since it was used verbatim) be "was compromised" since this was a one-time data theft that rendered all currently-live SecurID tokens useless?

Care to explain that a bit? I fail to see a direct parallel between farmland tenancy arrangements and Apple's relationship to iOS developers. Also, that's a mighty powerful rhetorical weapon (going all the way back to African-American slave

It's been pointed out on the other thread, but this tends to happen when iOS had the functionality first, not the other way round. Apple allows plenty of camera apps and other such "duplicated functionality" to remain in the app store.

Wow. Looks like C++ is still one of the performance kings among current programming languages. Can't say I enjoy using it though. It also looks like Go and Scala have a long way to go on compiler optimization. Not surprising, since they're

As much as Apple is prone to doing silly legal maneuvers, I really can't see this as anything other than massively out of context. I can't find the original document that Techdirt is claiming to quote. I would not be surprised if this is fr

Okay, here it is in Perl, the granddaddy of them all when it comes to implicit variables: 1. map { $_ * 2 } (1..10) 2. reduce { $a + $b } (1..1000) 3. scalar grep { /(scala)|(akka)|(play framework)|(sbt)|(typesafe)/ } "This is an example tw

There are a lot of bold claims here, but "automated XSS protection" smells the fishiest to me. And since when did ostensibly open-source projects have closed betas? Release it now and get more eyes on your code.

Is there any reason this shouldn't work on an iOS device? It's all Javascript. I just can't get my iPad to pop up a keyboard to start triggering keypress events.

It isn't the SFMTA themselves -- they contract with an operation called NextBus. NextBus installs GPS tracking devices on the transit vehicles, which radio their route, direction, and position back to a central system that then computes ETA
