If this actually works as advertised, I hope it makes it to market as fast as possible. I'm pretty much done with the days of having new cavities, but I have composite fillings for all the cavities I did have, and ten years down the line th

Wow, thanks for the link. I'd never heard of sorting networks before. The first thing I thought of was "use an XOR swap to cut memory accesses"...

In theory, yes. But can you name a place you've worked where this was actually the case? If push came to shove I could probably take vacation even if my manager didn't think it was a good time, citing mental health/family issues/whatever. B

Someone who can turn over design of both hardware and software to a single team with a clear vision and give that team the authority to make any and all of the tough decisions required. So far I haven't seen this from design-by-committee Go

Yelp has had this for a while: when you visit a business page, the first reviews they show you are ones from your friends, if available. It's a good way to make sure you're not seeing spam reviews right off the bat, but it does rely on you

It definitely doesn't mean employees get to unilaterally declare when they're taking time off, if that's what you're wondering. I still have to go through the discussion with my manager about "No huge milestones coming up then, right? Your

My employer recently changed to a take-what-you-want vacation policy. So far it seems to be working well, with my French co-workers leading the way in using upwards of four weeks off. The part I really like is that they're tracking our time

This is awesome. Especially the bit where they point out exactly why a modern semi-automatic is more efficient than an open-design revolver. (Hint: where does the gas go?)

I wouldn't be complaining about having taken that shot. It's pretty great. Also, it's not like NGC7000 is about to go anywhere. Do it again tomorrow night!

Why is it that designers have managed to make this the accepted (and expected) reaction to this kind of exploitative stunt, but not writers? There was a small kerfuffle over HuffPo's treatment of volunteer contributors back when Aol bought

At first glance it looks like doing a query involves streaming the entire dataset into memory while selecting and projecting on the fly. If that's true, what happens when you have truly massive rows (i.e., things containing MEDIUMTEXTs or w

None of these are good reasons for Microsoft to buy the failing RIM. The Playbook is a joke, the distinction between enterprise and consumer is rapidly fading, and while yes, RIM is profitable, they won't be for much longer. And re-energizi

I cut caffeine out of my life completely when I went to see a psychiatrist about my anxiety problems and she told me one cup of coffee was enough to trigger a panic attack. A year later and I still don't consume it. I sleep better, go to be

That's sad. I'd like to be treated as a person, not a "resource", and the zeroth step in that is respecting my wishes. When I want to make a career change, I will make said desire known. Is there anything I can start saying to recruiters th
