This is a great set of slides. Love how they built up to a modern-ish design.

Devices using the exact same Qualcomm SoC can have significantly different performance and efficiency [0]. Samsung devices tend to do very well, even though they are typically among the first to ship the chips. In the article I've link

there are still many potential points of differentiation on each SoC. For flagships, the cores are pretty much identical, but the cache sizes, fabric, process, GPUs, etc. can change. For the SoCs being compared here, the new Exynos model ha

It is not at all surprising to me that the A52s’ 768G benches higher since it has 4 A78s vs the 1280’s 2. It is surprising that it seems to do better in power as well, since the 1280 is manufactured on a superior process.

Definitely not the software. Samsung consistently ships very well tuned flagships. Compare their performance and efficiency to other devices using the same SoC, and that much is clear. Of course, we can only say this about their Qualcomm de

Exynos has had at least one implementation which was significantly better than the contemporary Qualcomm SoC. (The Galaxy S6’s 7420).

One advantage I could see is a vertical tab bar mode that’s more visually consistent with the standard horizontal tab bar. Could even animate seamlessly between those modes.

How do you feel about short forward optimizations? If I understand it correctly, BOOMv3 can convert instructions under a short forward branch shadow to be predicated.

What would one do if they had half an instruction falling off the end of that window? Save it then deal with it when you have the other half next cycle? I’m assuming the decode window is aligned, but that may be a bad assumption.

In kernel eliminates context switching overhead. Theoretically a perfect JIT doesn’t need hardware security. Also, JSC has been faster on Mac than V8 until a few days ago.

I think the more important part in the case of the IO monad is not that it might fail, but that it’s a side effect in a lazy language. Not super sure though. Haven’t used much Haskell.

In fact, the A9 is likely at least as fast as the Helio P60 your Jelly’s got. It generally performs better than the Snapdragon 835, which is a higher performance implementation of the A73 + A53 design.

No one was using it in consumer hardware because it had only arrived in consumer hardware with Ice Lake. It's a great improvement over AVX2, so it's too bad Intel couldn't find a way to make it work for Alder Lake.

Declarative UI doesn’t have to be inefficient. SwiftUI is fast and IMO nicer to use than React. There are a few declarative UI frameworks in Rust as well (Druid is very nice).
