It’s not the first time we’ve been here , either, with AI although t this time it’s a bit more in the public , ie retail sphere. There are people who will confidently tell you that LLM are the next transistor level invention, and people wh

Do Nintendo keep their teams together longer? You usually can’t get a great engineering team by throwing a bunch of good engineers together, it takes time and work. I don’t know much about the game industry but from what little I have heard

Huh, interesting. I think I recall running into that one also, but not consistently. The mis-match with GP usage are deeper than re-gendering the name though. Seems to me Mary Sue/Gary Stu is fundamentally about projection/wish

I think this is an idiosyncratic use of the trope “Mary Sue”, which isn’t really gendered, or wasn’t originally. Unless the usage has drifted a lot more that I’m aware of?

In my experience newcomers and junior engineers don't get better by writing more bad code. They learn mostly by 3 methods. 1) finding flaws in their code the hard way (slow) 2) getting careful feedback from more experienced people

Not really. Ideas have always been cheap. They occur to everyone. Most of them aren't great, let alone good. But good ideas, even great ones, rarely mean much on their own. It's always been execution.

There is an old quote about this, I’m too lazy to find at the moment (from the 80s or 90s?). Gist was that we call the new thing AI until we really understand it, then we start calling it machine learning. Lather, rinse, repeat.

This is true, but misses the important part that they (the older set) are often correct. For every new idea that really changes everything there are a huge number that die on the vine or just become a ho-hum tool in a big toolbox. Most ne

Part of the parents point is that is isn’t true in general. The overall efficiency isn’t much better , so service level basically comes down to how you chop up available bandwidth. So if you happen to live somewhere with oversubscribed LTE
