The fact that you know the shortcuts for select all, copy, and paste puts you in the top percentile of users. Most people don't even know that's possible, and certainly not with keyboard shortcuts. (The point being that for most users the f

It seems I misunderstood inline caching. If the call site itself is modified then it can be as fast as the JIT compiler. Interesting.

I didn't mean to imply that messages are faster than JIT compiled calls. There's still at least one level of indirection in the optimal case, not sure about in practice. However Dalvik being faster today doesn't mean that Obj-C is suddenly

This is so true. I like me some Linux, but OS X has won me over. I thought the iPod was a fad for people with money to waste, until I got a Mac and discovered how much thought Apple puts into their products. Sure I had a HDD based MP3 playe

They should be. I like Ruby, Python, and C but you can't help but be jealous of more robust platforms such as Erlang. We'd do well to stop inventing more of the same crap and actually advancing the state of the art. C isn't going anywhere n

Ah yes that's true. You can use Protocol Buffers but still over HTTP. You'd have to use Erlang to get around HTTP, which obviously won't work for everyone.

Awesome. If functions are allowed as data, evaluated as they're encountered, this has great potential.

Not sure if kd-trees are lesser known, but they are neat. I only learned about them recently so to me they were "lesser known". "In computer science, a kd-tree (short for k-dimensional tree) is a space-partitioning data structure for organi

I must not understand monads. I thought I knew the basics of how to use them, and have used them in the little bit of Haskell I have written, but that makes no sense at all to me. What are the apples and oranges supposed to represent? Why w

Marco is right on as usual. My use of the iPad is similar anyway. While you might be better off with a MacBook Air if you find yourself using iPad + keyboard a lot, it's still about $1000 cheaper to get the iPad.

There are open-source libraries (mostly MIT and BSD licensed) for all the key things you need: cookies, sessions, serving static files, talking to DBs, templates, etc. I pieced together a web service using node-machine[1] at the core (port

You could do it with a plain old text editor afaics. It looks like a regular Cappuccino project. (edit: that is, if you only want to deploy it for the web. I don't know about building a desktop version) Btw it does support labels, they're j

The parts that are written in C are mainly the lisp interpreter itself, and some windowing stuff. Unless you are doing something really strange you never need to dive into the C internals.
