I'm trying to assemble a list: https://sjmulder.nl/en/textonly.html but so far there aren't many sites like this that I found useful.

Yeah, having the OLE site and window provided by the framework helps a ton. Once you have those putting in the browser is a breeze. (I E_NOTIMPL-ed all the fancy menu merging and window border stuff but you get that with Delphi and .NET) I

With C++' destructor call guarantee and its templating features, it's feasible to implement shared_ptr-like types for foreign object types. Microsoft's ComPtr for example takes care of COM referencing counting. If some VM wou

Embedding Internet Explorer through COM also seems the only way to embed a browser in Win32 without bundling an entire browser with your app. I implemented that in plain C for giggles, it was enlightening but also very cumbersome.

On Windows 10, Notepad uses 2 MB and Wordpad 12 MB. I'm quite surprised that the latter can fit a full, Ribbon equiped word processor in so little memory. Not that I'd be concerned about a few tens of MB nowadays but on the whole

I think the memory management issue can be addressed by using reference counting semantics in the language (wrt aliasing, scoping and weak vs strong references). That maps well to both manual management and garbage collection. Some more sea

I think templated or generic handle classes are pretty good for dealing with foreign objects. They can handle any bookkeeping a VM requires. The background is that I've been playing with C to write Win32 apps that are highly backwards

I'm on the lookout for a language that does a) not itself require a VM (can be properly compiled) or significant runtime, but b) can be hosted in a VM without too many leaky abstractions, and c) can interface well with other ABIs and V

If you're the author of this site, please consider toning down the number of sticky elements on the page. This is not a good experience: https://sjmulder.nl/i/rubygarage.png

It's a shame that there is no name for .ALLSRC shared between bmake and gmake. An alternative is to use a variable, but then you lose VPATH compatibility: foo: foo.o bar.o $(LD) foo.o bar.o ... My other gripe with bmak

A friend who is building an Linux appliance is using Yocto: https://www.yoctoproject.org/ . He also talked about Mender, mentioned in the other comment. I don't know how much overlap there is between these projects.

Cosmos OS is another .NET-based OS toolkit that does this. Here's a video of one of the developers talking about this, and other things: https://channel9.msdn.com/Shows/On-NET/Chad-Z-Hower-aka-Kudz...

Are you using a high DPI screen with a low scaling factor? If I set zoom to 150%, I can easily read the text 4 meters away from my desktop monitor. Not comfortable _at all_ up close.
