I wonder what the authors of this article are trying to achieve. Do they want to get back in touch with their estranged adult children? If that’s the goal then this approach is unlikely to be successful. It reads more like someone who is hu

> Have you inherited a codebase written by a coding rockstar. It works, but it’s a tangled mess. Have you ever inherited a codebase written by a 0.1x developer? Genuine question, I never have.

Rocket engines are much more efficient at lower atmospheric pressure. The bigger the nozzle the faster the exhaust gas. Efficiency is proportional to the square of the speed of the exhaust gas. The bigger the nozzle the lower the pressure o

Space is better for marketing and gaining traction. I strongly suspect they’re quietly talking to missile manufacturers.

Now your rocket needs to be strong horizontally and vertically, rather than just vertically. You have a much heavier rocket.

I’m talking about the UK. No idea about Sweden. Regarding long waits for care. You want to be the patient who has to wait for ages. It means you’re going to be fine. You don’t want to be the person who gets rushed past the queue.

No, lung cancer CT scans happen inside a week. I know this from experience. You might wait a year for a knee replacement.

I think that’s still affected by speculative execution. The CPU will process the step ahead assuming that a[i] != b[i] while it is doing the a[i] XOR b[i] check. So it’ll be faster if: most characters match, most characters don’t match or t

What’s the exact algorithm you would write for that? Let’s say you have a bool, $is_match then whenever two chars of the string don’t match you write false to it. It takes slightly longer to write false than do nothing. You’re still leaking

Right now the strongest selection pressure on humans is for ppl who have “irresponsible” unprotected sex. Sensible people who use birth control are failing to reproduce.

The parent post makes a good point that it’s very hard to do this kind of research well. We should default to skepticism. There is a replication crisis on right now.

20 years ago it was pretty plausible. Most of the genetic effects that we knew about were large. Maybe all of them were large? Now we know that most effects are small, and there aren’t useful interventions that can treat the effects.

You’re right that rarer SNPs have big effect sizes. However the problem is that they’re rare so you don’t make much money treating ppl with rare diseases.

It would be like trying to legislate to affect the value of gold. Many countries try to do this. It has had almost no effect on the value of gold. For example in the US in 1933 private ownership of gold bullion was punishable by 10 years im

I agree that biology is fantastically complicated. When I say we “understand” everything that matters about a computer; I don’t mean one person understands. I mean each important part is understood by at least one person. Together humanity

As a biologist who moved into software engineering I love working with actual machines. You can think of a design, build it and have it work as you expect. You can’t do that in biology. The reason is that we “understand” how computers work.

I’ve set up my life so I have my own safety net (I made lots of money as an employee then saved it) Now at age ~40 I can afford to take risks like zuck and gates could when they were 20. I’m my own rich parents.

The trick is to work out who is going to reciprocate when you give. If you realise someone is a “net taker” then stop giving to them. That way you end up with lots of reciprocal relationships where both parties give.
