If each of us bore all the suffering in the world at once, we'd never get anywhere. You've inserted yourself in a conversation occurring a tremendous distance from the events, and it's not like the comment was even making lig

It just feels like 20th century americans didn't really value their time. They were the weird ones, apparently content (I don't really think that) to do all the pointless stuff they did.

Two responses to my comment, opposite recommendations. I'm inclined to agree with you in general, but the contradicting opinions can't be good for newcomers.

Civ seems to basically survive on its ability to capture the imagination, but doesn't offer much in terms of strategic depth, competitive multiplayer, or verisimilitude. It feels like it's open to a disruption by a more adventurou

Not the parent, but when I was trying to learn R+R I kept getting confused by what they meant by 'state'. React state belongs to some component (whichever can mutate it) and is passed to children via props, and generally seems to

His writing doesn't seem to convey that to me. On the contrary: there's a kind of pretentious of style that I find uniquely intolerable. Which is too bad, because I'd otherwise probably be pretty interested in some of what he

Same. DFW at least plumbed some of the psychological deep-end that I (apparently) have as a white male nerd. Such as: some confusing feelings about class and the relative merits of high- and low-brow art, and this strong un-expressed emotio

On a couple occasions I've tried narrating vignettes from my own life in a detached omniscient candid way, which a) makes me feel ridiculous, like I'm making fun of myself, but b) is sort of therapeutic, like I'm forgiving my

I wouldn't be surprised if, except for cases of extreme violence, if video games (especially, much more than TV since the audience takes part in the action) and the like serve to pacify their audience in the long run. Perhaps a pacifis

But the coffee's bad, the shops, wifi, food, and drinks are overpriced and lack variety, the piano is off-limits, and nobody's rooted here long enough to invest energy in it as a place for community. What you describe would be gre

One thing worth considering is that not everyone considers the same things to be worthwhile, but popularity is too coarse a metric to use to choose what to read. IJ was one of the most valuable (to me) books I've ever read, and I final

A book of Garrison Keillor short stories from early in his career, called (I think) "Happy to Be Here". Pure hilarious americana, where everyone is fleecing everyone else all the time but they're always polite.
