I suspect the title is referencing a monty python sketch about an exploding penguin. I'd find the sketch but I'm on limited mobile data at the moment, but I'm sure YouTube has it.

I switch my family email from google apps to fastmail because I got sick of the support calls every time google changed the UI, which seemed to be monthly. Fastmail has been rock solid and lives up to its name. The spam filtering isn't

Partially yes. During the 90s when the New Zealand economy wasn't so great a lot of people left for Australia due to our mutual(ish) agreement that lets citizens of both countries live in the other (NZ gives Australias a permanent resi

30% is the highest tax bracket, in NZ on the equivalent of USD 55k pa (NZ$77600 right now) you'd pay $17835 in tax, or around 23% marginal. There is the matter of 15% GST to consider, but it's not something you often think about a

Auckland is definitely more multicultural, but in my experience as an ex-wellingtonian it's more divided. Wellington's size and geography tends to force people together, whereas Auckland keeps them apart.

Also while the food is high quality don't expect the variety you're used to. Until recently NZ had a pretty bland palette.

I normally get full speed to the US. Single connections hurt because of the latency, but the capacity is there. The main issue was the monopoly on transit, but domestic competition has helped a bit.

Remember that 30% is it for tax, other than the 15% GST built in to all purchases. There's no city or state taxes, no payroll tax, no additional costs for health insurance and no cost of compliance - as an employed individual you don&#

Refrigerated pasteurised milk keeps at least three weeks, normally only 3-4 days of that are gone by the time it's sold. If it only lasted days your refrigerator is failing and needs replacing.

The pre-built one only flies. The lego one can be a submarine, turn in to a rocket, shoot lasers, arrack your brother... much more fun! Same is true of AWS, I'm just older.

If you're using something like an F5 for your load balancer you can implement the queue there. Cheaper than provisioning hardware for occasional peaks and F5s can serve a lot of traffic.

To clarify individuals don't directly pay the tax. All sales of goods and services have 15% tax added. It's collected by the companies and remitted to the government. Since all prices have the 15% added most people don't pay

Correct. Most financial reporting doesn't count GST collected as revenue. There are circumstances where this isn't true but generally it's booked as a liability.

GST was paid for all physical goods shipped, and recently it's been added to digital goods. Apple doesn't pay that though, the consumer does.
