I definitely agree that soft hyphens are a simplistic workaround if used in the way I suggested, and are indeed inferior to a complex and well-thought out hyphenation system. Still, if someone is considering `word-wrap: break-word;` for nar

Sounds like a use case for soft hyphens. If you don’t mind where the words break, you could sprinkle soft hyphens through the text to get it to break more often than the default renderer would otherwise.

Even for static text, line breaks (<br>) can cause unexpected results unless you check at varying viewports. Non-breaking spaces may provide a better option, depending on the specifics of the situation.

One of Yale’s open courses has a lecture that covers The Crying of Lot 49[1]. A good place to start for anyone reading Pynchon for the first time. Gravity’s Rainbow is my personal favourite, but takes an enormous amount of work as a reader.

For a slightly different approach, shown[1] will let you generate responsive SVG charts ahead of time, so no JS is needed. Useful when you have very basic chart needs. 1. https://stephenhutchings.github.io/shown/

Koyaanisqatsi, a film in a similar vein, had a profound impact on me when I first watched it in my twenties. The cinematography is also done by Ron Fricke, but it’s directed by Godfrey Reggio with a Philip Glass score.
