First off, normal glass also blocks IR light (which is a good thing) when the outside produces more IR light you want to cool the inside, and when it's producing less you want to heat the inside. Anyway, the energy from sunlight is for the

There are plenty of useful things to memorize that let you flat out skip steps. Some of this stuff might feel like party tricks, but don't assume people are using the same steps subconsciously.

you don't need to know long division... for well... anything On that we can more or less agree. Perhaps we could salvage some of that time and put it to more productive use. And then perhaps after a few years we can go back and look at

Math is not a single linear path. EX: You don't need to know long division to get Algebra. You can even go the other way. If you say 4a + 8b + 4 = x, and a = 10 * 10; b = 10. Now divide by 2b. Want to explain another base, say a = 16 *

To play the devils advocate: IMO, it's the focus on the micro steps that's the problem. HS level math is vary simple. You can write a single textbook that covered the full range of math from preschool to calculus, but the focus on 3 days o

Except coal cost's ~1/10th what refined Oil does. 1 short ton (907kg) of coal costs $71.25 as of October 2010 coal has an energy density around ~32.5 (MJ/kg). 907kg * (32.5MJ / kg ) / $71.25 = 413 MJ per $. Compared to gas at ~3$ / gallon.

It is always fun to challenge people on their long held beliefs and make them rationally defend their position. The view point that only one side needs to defend their position is not rational. At the same time you don't need to look at

I agree, but it's good to step back and think why that's true. The real value in OO programming is being able to reduce complexity by reusing code in a new ways. Either by creating several instances of the same object that all manage a com

Competition != death. Plenty of companies had the same basic idea as an existing company and still made it big. Sometimes execution really is the most important part ex: Dropbox.

If you run a full analysis large scale wind farms are the safest form of power generation. The problem with a simplistic analysis is most wind deaths are upfront and most wind power generation is vary new. Build 1TW of just about anything a
