I should add: the above is about the only quibble I can think of, which is impressive. I love love love pandoc! It's a highly dependable and capable swiss army docs tool. I use it constantly, eg to help generate CLI help text and HTML,

I doubt it's that. Rather, you can write easy-to-install pandoc plugins in Lua, so prototyping with it makes a lot of sense. https://pandoc.org/custom-readers.html https://pandoc.org/custom-writers.html

Agreed, and I would state it more strongly: it's unclear how / significant extra work to provide good error messages if you have a separate lexer stage. And sooner or later you will want good error messages.

Haskell (using https://docs.haskellstack.org/en/stable/GUIDE/#script-interp... ). The downside: requires 1. installing stack and 2. waiting for it to install ghc and libs on first run of the script.

GPLv3+ gives you the most options. You can always relax it later if needed (easy to do as long as you are the sole copyright holder).
