Interesting read—thanks! One question: in the CoW example, if VM A modifies the data post-fork, what does VM B see when it later copies that data? Does it get the original data from the time of the fork, or VM A’s modified version?

That’s not necessarily what was meant though. “Not inconsistent” is more cautious and less assertive. It allows for some ambiguity rather than claiming perfect consistency.

I don’t know the details of how it works, but considering the environmental impact of fracking, I’m afraid something like this might have many unwanted consequences.

I just can’t imagine sitting with a headset on, next to my wife, watching the NFL. It could very well change for me, but it does not sound appealing.

Ah, okay. I think we have different ideas of what constitutes a failed state.

What is the reason, then, that California cannot be considered a first world state, and instead a failed state? And are there other states that used to have this designation, but have lost it in your view? Just curious.

I don’t disagree in principle. But people also have to look at the interface while using it. There’s a balance, for sure, but strict utilitarian design is a no for me.

I don’t think NavinF shows any lack of concern for the issue as such. What’s being talked about here is whether OpenAI’s being forthright concerning their motives for keeping the tech closed. I think we can all agree it is valid to be cauti

This is an interesting comment to me! How do you define secular-looking? Is it a lack of some particular design element?

You are going beyond the constraints, “if our communication with a 7-year-old child were limited to the level we achieve with crows.” We know we are able to teach children language because we have shared modes of communication through which

Is this more of a limitation of our ability to communicate with the animals? If we could talk intelligibly with a crow, maybe we could teach it? Conversely, if our communication with a 7-year-old child were limited to the level we achieve w

Exactly this. A “half” in my mind translates to 0.5. I don’t do any conversion, 0.5 exists as the very concept of “half” in my brain.

In moving from EU to the US, the biggest difference I noticed is the reliance on fractions over decimals. 1/4th of something as opposed to .25. That’s probably what I miss the most about using the metric system on a daily basis.
